General requirements courses and seminars


All students must take and pass examinations in the subjects covered by these courses/seminars.
 
These courses/seminars give an interdisciplinary perspective on the business administration field. They allow students to cover a broad range of epistemologies and research methodologies, providing them with the main tools common to all business research disciplines.
 
** Students in the Economics and Finance concentrationhave special Preliminary courses in September of year 1 and the first quarter of year 1. They must take some of the General Requirement courses presented here in September of year 2 and the first quarter of year 2.

Intensive courses


From the end of August to the end of September of Year 1, students must follow four intensive courses in:
- Finance (20 hours)
- Marketing (20 hours)
- Accounting and Control (20 hours)
- Strategic Management (20 hours)
 
(Students demonstrating a good background in these fields may be exempted from some of these courses. Exemptions are granted only by the Director of the Ph.D. Program after recommendation by the course professor).

The first quarter of Year 1 and year 2


Year 1
- Microeconomics for Business Research (30 hours)
- Applied Statistics (30 hours)
- Organization Behavior (20 hours)
- Information Systems (10 hours)

Year 2
Epistemology and Philosophy of Science (30 hours)

Additional seminars


In addition to these courses/seminars, all students must also attend to the following seminars.
 
The Student Research Seminar (45 hours):
- Year 1: only when their own field is concerned
- Years 2 to 4: all seminars (45 hours/year)
 
The Professional Development Seminar:
- Second and third quarter of Year 2 (15 hours x 2)
 
Students must also participate in Departmental Seminars (research presentation by ESSEC professors or by invited professors from the international academic world).
