Specialized Master in International Business Law and Management: Alumni speak out

"François-Régis Montazel, with a 1997 ESSEC Specialized Master in International Business Law and Management, and Cassandre Mariton, class of 2001, describe their experiences."

“In addition to purely legal matters, I also learned the ins and outs of accounting, finance, and marketing…”

François-Régis Montazel, who has a degree from the Institut de Droit des Affaires (Paris II-Assas) and ESSEC Master’s in International Business Law and Management (Class of 1997), is now a tax specialist with PriceWaterhouseCoopers/Landwell, and he tells us about his career.

How was your Master’s year at ESSEC?

“The quality and diversity of the program rapidly won me over. Aside from the legal aspects, I became familiar with accounting, finance, and marketing. During my corporate internship, my internship supervisor insisted that a good jurist or a good tax specialist had to understand the way a company works, since these account for the vast majority of the biggest firms’ clients. It is clear that my Master’s year was perfectly suited to meet these demands.”

What have you been doing since then?

“Following my internship with PriceWaterhouseCoopers, I joined the company’s law office as a tax specialist. Today, I am responsible for advising company managers on any matters that may concern them in terms of legal or fiscal repercussions, in such matters as mergers, acquisitions, listings on the stock market, and so forth. I am also responsible for managing a number of the firm’s clients.”

In retrospect, what do you think of the ESSEC Master’s program?

“Currently, for example, I do tax audits during closing of accounts. These audits are carried out in close cooperation with the accountant auditors, and this is why it is obviously essential to have excellent knowledge of accounting rules and auditing methods. Thanks to the diverse and very operationally-oriented teaching, the Master’s in International Business Law and Management provides a global vision of corporations which enables you to quickly become fully operational. “

“At ESSEC, we immediately benefit from the network, we’re part of the family…”

Cassandre Mariton, who holds a degree in private law (Paris II), a Master of Law (LLM) degree from Cornell University (USA) and a Master’s in International Business Law and Management (class of 2001) from ESSEC, is now a member of the Cleary Gottlieb Steen Hamilton law office, and she talks about her experience in apprenticeship.

Why did you choose to do your Master’s degree at ESSEC?

“I wanted to join ESSEC’s Master’s in International Business Law and Management program because it provides an opportunity to complete the program within the apprenticeship framework. Thus I spent a year with L’Oréal in the Regulatory Business and Product Communications department, reporting to an alumna of the Master’s program. I continued the work-study program until April two days a week, and then moved to full time work until the end of the school year.”

What was the added value of your ESSEC Master’s experience?

“At ESSEC, in the Master’s program, we immediately benefit from the network. We’re part of the family. Besides, relations with professors are very open and individual.”
