The GMBA students were invited for an office visit at Amazon Web Service – Singapore location. With a warm welcome from AWS APAC Business Development team, we had a chance to learn more about Amazon's overall culture as well as their cloud computing department. As Amazon is currently a leading technology giant, our group was so excited to hear directly from the team’s first-hand working experiences as well as talking to other MBA students from our neighbor universities.
During the sharing session, our presenter focused on expressing Amazon’s mission on becoming the most customer-centric company along with their strategy globally and regionally. The company achieves their goals by a combination of leadership principles, which management team and every employee expect to live by, and a culture of non-stop innovation.
As the conversation went along, the team helped us clear up some prejudges on working in a tech firm. Even though Amazon Web Service and cloud computing sounds very technical, their team members have a wide variety of backgrounds, other than just computer science or engineering. They are composed of individuals coming from psychology to mathematics or MBA and marketing etc. A personal passion with strong culture fit is what makes a solid team at Amazon.
The discussion ended with some drinks and pizzas for Friday happy hours. We had the opportunities to mingle with other MBA students and Amazon staffs from different teams in the office. Their complex exciting daily work, as well as enthusiastic energy, was really inspiring. Between continuous efforts to expand strategically, handling cross-continental teamwork over late nights in the office and serving customers in a timely manner, they sure remember to squeeze in some real fun.
