Goals

The result of a partnership between ESSEC Business School and Société Générale, the Chair of Media & Entertainment is a research and teaching chair that brings together a team of ESSEC professors and professionals from the relevant sectors with the following goals:

• training high-potential, future managers in the various specificities and vocations of the sector

• developing research so as to analyze the fundamentals of the sector, reflect upon the various issues in question, and forecast trends.

The aim is also to set up a think tank, engaging in open consideration and anticipation of the various stakes of a sector where the worlds of culture, economics and politics merge.
The Chair of Media & Entertainment is aimed at ESSEC MBA students wishing to pursue a career in the media and cultural industries.

Activities: Teaching

Every year, the Chair of Media & Entertainment can incorporate up to 20 ESSEC MBA and/or Specialized Master’s students who are especially interested in a career in the media or within the cultural industries.
The Media & Entertainment Chair course is part of the ESSEC MBA program, and covers five components:

• a selection of mandatory courses from the ESSEC MBA program

• a selection of optional courses from the ESSEC MBA program

• one Chair seminar

• one research project

• one or two work placements in the sector, covering a minimum of 6 months in total

Activities: Research

Research is an essential component of the Media & Entertainment Chair. It comprises applied research into a number of the sector’s determining factors, as well as fundamental academic research guided by a structured research question spanning several years, involving professors, doctoral students and research and development associates.
Its main objectives are to:

• develop monitoring and observation activities;

• develop research for analyzing the fundamentals of the sector, reflecting on problematic areas and anticipating trends.

Activities: Professional Seminar

Approximately ten conferences with professional representatives from the worlds of television, the press, publishing, and cinema (amongst others) are organized. Each one lasts 1 ½ hours and opens with a presentation by the guest speaker on his or her company, the choices made, professional life within, the stakes of the sector, and the speaker’s motivation.

This is followed by a question-answer session with the students. Conferences may take place at the guest speaker’s place of work, offering the possibility of a tour of the company in question.

Achievements: the Chair visits Cannes

A business trip to Cannes was organized in conjunction with the 2006 Cannes Film Festival, May 19-22. Student activities were divided up as follows:

• Morning: meeting with professionals from various sectors (producers, agents, distributors, financial directors)

• Afternoon: access to screening rooms and the legendary stairway

• Evening: participation in invitation-only evening events
