Private Equity Chair

As part of the ESSEC Development Campaign, the Private Equity Chair was created in November 2006 and welcomed its first class of students in January 2007. This was achieved in partnership with its three founder members: Barclays Private Equity, Grant Thornton and Linklaters. These three partners bring with them complementary skills and knowledge that enrich the various academic issues pertaining to Private Equity. The Holder of the Chair is Professor José-Miguel Gaspar of ESSEC’s Finance Department

Private Equity Chair

Objectives

The main aim of the Chair is to carry out research activity, and to develop knowledge and innovative skills on the initiative of the holder and partners of the Chair, and this within a sector that has undergone significant change in recent times: professionalization, internationalization, and marked growth. Professionals working in the Private Equity sector must now be able to acquire a wide range of skills and expertise. It is for this reason that the Private Equity Chair has chosen to offer a forum for the exchange of ideas between the academic world, students and representatives of the profession.

Activities: Research

Research is one of the key components of the Private Equity Chair. The Chair will act as a resource center, offering specialized databases and doctoral scholarships that will support research activity and help in the production of top-level results for publication in renowned academic journals. The second main activity of the Chair will hinge on the production of applied research based upon managerial issues, via a Case Study Program. Published in English according to Harvard guidelines, these case studies will deal with management situations as experienced by Private Equity professionals. Via this program, it will also be possible to produce specialized sector-specific studies, and articles designed for publication in Private Equity-related journals, in direct relation to the research orientation of the Chair.

Activities: Teaching

The Private Equity Chair is able to receive each year approximately a dozen ESSEC MBA and/or Specialized Master’s students interested in a career in the Finance industry. Those selected will follow a thorough and demanding series of courses (including a seminar) that will give them the opportunity to meet and interact with professionals from the Private Equity sector.

Organization

José-Miguel Gaspar, Associate Professor for ESSEC’s Finance Department is the Private Equity Chair-Holder. In this capacity, he is in charge of the core research activity of the Chair and supervises the work carried out by the students selected.

Steering Committee
A steering committee meets twice a year to assess the activities of the Chair. The committee consists of the three founding partners, ESSEC Senior Management, and the Chair-Holder.
