Cracking down on tax avoidance: are financial reporting disclosures out of control?

In the wake of recent tax avoidance scandals (...) the European Commission has called for more...

Cracking down on tax avoidance: are financial reporting disclosures out of control?

In the wake of recent tax avoidance scandals – like the one in which Apple Inc. currently finds itself – the European Commission has called for more financial disclosure from multinational corporations. But is disclosure synonymous with transparency, or can it also cloud the facts? ESSEC Accounting and Management Control Professor Anne Jeny-Cazavan discusses both sides of the argument.

According to a US congressional report, between 2009 and 2012, Apple funneled some 30bn dollars into an Irish subsidiary, without declaring any tax residence. This allowed the firm to bring in $74bn in profits, paying little or no income tax to any national government. Apple hadn’t just found a way to pay fewer taxes, they’d found the ultimate loophole: a way to pay virtually none at all.
Unfortunately, Apple’s case is by no means unique. Today’s multinationals are finding tax loopholes and bringing less and less cash into the public sector of developed economies. So what’s the problem? How can governments curtail this kind of tax evasion?
There are two key arguments on how to deal with this tax avoidance issue. While some argue in favor of more regulation and more detailed reporting, others believe that the sheer volume of reports drowns out important information. In general, past empirical disclosure literature has suggested that more disclosure is good for users. But there is also evidence that it is possible to have too much disclosure, which may confuse users.

Faso Soap wins Global Social Venture Competition Grand Prize

Supported by ESSEC, two students from Burundi and Burkina Faso won the Global Social Venture...

Faso Soap wins Global Social Venture Competition Grand Prize

Two students from Burundi and Burkina Faso developed a mosquito-repellent soap to prevent malaria transmission. Supported by ESSEC, they won the Global Social Venture Competition (GSVC) Grand Prize of $25,000.

Every year, ESSEC is commissioned by Berkeley to identify projects which could have a strong social or environmental impact in French speaking areas: Europe, Africa, Middle East and Quebec. The objective is to have these projects participate in the GSVC world final at the Haas School of Business (University of California Berkeley). This competition, initiated in 1999, is the only international competition for students and young graduates with business plans that have social and environmental reach.
"We received 140 applications for the 2013 edition, accompanied a selection of candidates throughout the entire process and supported the two finalists up to the GSVC world finale.” explained Mélanie Verdier, an MSc in Management student and the competition coordinator for the French-speaking zones. Verdier is pleased to share that the competition outcome is unprecedented, “It’s the first time that a French-speaking project holds a place on the international podium". Moctar Dembélé and Gérard Niyondiko, both students at
and the founders of Faso Soap, owe their success to the innovative solution their company is going to produce and market: a locally manufactured antibacterial and anti-mosquito soap intended to prevent the spread of malaria in the resident populations of endemic areas.

Preparing a large scale social project

The project’s success also comes from comprehensive preparation, supported by ESSEC and the Institute for Innovation and Social Entrepreneurship team, which included training seminars, assistance in developing the social business plan, getting in touch with experts and journalists, preparing the final pitch and financial support. This network of support made the project viable and contributed to its success while also ensuring the strongest possible impact.
Thanks to their participation in GSVC, Faso Soap was awarded $26,500 in prize money (first place: $25,000 and the People’s Choice Award: $1,500). Moreover, the event was also a great way for the team to meet investors and to increase visibility.
The second finalist project submitted by ESSEC, Nafa Naana, was also recognized by the jury as it placed among the top 10 of 640 applications from the around world. Nafa Naana aims at making energy-efficient products which improve living conditions, more accessible for Burkinabes families, particularly those with the lowest income.

ESSEC Business School holds the groundbreaking of its new campus at Nepal Hill together with a high-level international forum in Singapore

Mr Heng Swee Keat, Minister for Education, is guest-of-honour at the Forum

The S$40 million new campus of ESSEC Business School in Singapore marks the commencement of its construction with a groundbreaking ceremony on site yesterday. Located at Nepal Hill in one-north, the new ESSEC campus in Asia finds its home nestled in the surroundings of Singapore’s integrated research business hub with Biopolis and Fusionopolis in its neighbourhood.
Groundbreaking Ceremony
The occasion was graced by the Singapore Economic Development Board’s Managing Director, Mr Yeoh Keat Chuan in the presence of Mr Heah Soon Poh, Assistant Chief Executive Officer (Cluster Development Group), JTC Corporation, 15 members of the International Advisory Board (IAB) of ESSEC Business School as well as Alumni, students representatives and ESSEC’s key partners. Members of IAB comprising top global corporate executives and academics are here for their annual meeting held in Singapore.
Mr Yeoh said, “The establishment of ESSEC’s Asia-Pacific campus will help to address the region’s growing demand for management education, and equip future global leaders with the skills to drive business strategies in Asia. This campus is a valuable addition to Singapore’s initiative, which aims to develop a cluster of business schools, professional services firms and corporate universities. These institutions can leverage one another’s strengths to generate new thinking and practices on talent and leadership development.”

Conference on “Globalization and the return of Geography”, in Singapore

The phenomenon of globalization is not new. Yet, the dynamic nature of globalization means that old questions have to be continually reformulated and that new issues regularly come to confront us.

We have realized, sometimes painfully during the last few years, that globalization is not the “end of history.” We also increasingly understand that globalization is not the end of geography. Everywhere around the world, geography is back with a vengeance. As we stand in the midst of the ongoing financial and economic crisis, the consequences of which still remain unclear, it appears that the opportunities and challenges of globalization need to be reframed through a focus on geography. While high growth in the newly industrializing economies is taking millions of people out of poverty, unbridled industrialization for many years has been linked to other crises such as resource depletion and global warming. Debates between “early” and “late” polluters remain intense.

Imagination Week - ESSEC Business School – 2013 Edition

Imagination, creativity and innovation in the wake of the new challenges of globalization.

Cergy, December 11, 2012 – ESSEC Business School will launch the 2013 edition of the Imagination Week: from January 8 - 11, 2013, the first-year MSc in Management students will meet to imagine possible answers to the challenges of globalization.
Asserting its innovative character, ESSEC wants "its students to shape their own track ... so they can proactively develop their personal qualities and their qualities as future managers, able to adapt and react to an unstable international environment. The Imagination Week is a future-looking exercise, projecting into a future both near and distant: 2030. It helps some 600 students understand the richness and creativity involved in working in multidisciplinary and multinational teams" explained Françoise Rey, Dean for Academic Programs.
The Imagination Week is a unique program in the highly competitive Business School environment, in France and abroad. Xavier Pavie, Academic Director of the Imagination Week explained that: "with the Imagination Week we want to go beyond conventional educational models. Our speakers are not traditional ESSEC speakers and have not come to give a lecture, but rather to convey messages on creativity and imagination. We want them to share their experiences, how they lived them, if they identified any methods and if so, the role they played in their creation processes, their experiences and their lives in general. These personal experiences are what students can really learn from.

A Memorable First Forum for the Council on Business & Society

In the face of critical questions that are the cause for debate between the world of business and society, ESSEC Business School, and its four Council partners, introduced to the world a unique meeting which fostered an exceptional exchange of ideas and intellectual discourse.

An inaugural forum focused on corporate governance and leadership

Crisis: the word that has been mentioned almost daily in the news since 2008. Although it has been discussed predominantly in relation to the financial crisis, the idea does not just relate to the social or economic elements, but also the equally present crisis of confidence between businesses and society. The questions about management and the distribution of wealth in a company, the consideration for natural resources in business, the concerns about unequal treatment – between nations and even within the same nation – are becoming more and more worrying.
In the face of such a situation, we can choose one of two positions: the position of one who says something or the position of one who does something. The former, certainly a more comfortable stance to take, risks reinforcing the dichotomy between companies and society. However, the latter, although more ambitious, seeks to surpass what is taken for granted as an antagonistic relationship between business and society in order to bring these two worlds, which are so obviously interconnected, together. And this choice, the choice to do something, was made by ESSEC and four other international business schools, when they created the Council on Business & Society.
The first Forum organized by this international alliance took place in the beautiful setting of the Maison des Arts et Métiers in Paris on November 16-17, 2012. The day and a half event united 200 people, from various domains, who came together in order to share their points of view and expertise about corporate governance and leadership and how it influences businesses and society as a whole. A unique mix of academians, students, managers and CEO’s of large corporations as well as institutional decision-makers coming from different countries - of the alliance and beyond- were brought together in order to tackle this theme chosen for the first edition of the Forum. In addition to the interdisciplinary dimension of the Forum, the other specificity of the event lays in the fact that it was a multicultural and multi-generational gathering.

A multicultural event on an international scale

ESSEC Business School, which has been committed to socially responsible leadership since its creation in 1907, was at the genesis of this project. The four alliance partners; Mannheim Business School in Germany, School of Management, Fudan University in China, Keio Business School in Japan, and Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth – each regarded as a premier institution in their respective countries – significantly enriched to the debate via contributions from their professors, students, and alumni.
During this day and a half event, which was a dynamic combination of plenary sessions, parallel workshops and keynote speeches, many of the major issues related to corporate governance were debated: shareholder power and responsibility, the presence of women on boards, the leadership of family and state firm boards, CEO power and responsibility, the media scrutiny of CEO’s, as well as the limits of accountability in regards to corruption. Thanks to the contribution of 45 participants from various professional backgrounds and countries – five of which were ESSEC professors whose efforts were coordinated by Professor Patricia Charlety – this diverse collaboration, which took in to consideration different points of view in relation to the politics, history, traditions and cultures of its participants, led to a wider scope of analysis and recommendations about how business and society should interconnect.
Other key take-aways from the Forum are the particularly brilliant contributions made by the keynote speakers. Amongst the notable speeches, Eric Labaye, President of McKinsey Global Institute, made a remarkable opening presentation during which he discussed the challenges of doing business in the 21st century. Peter Solmssen, the General Counsel and a member of the Board of Directors for Siemens AG, did not hesitate to discuss the sad business of corruption that took place in Siemens in 2006. He used this to demonstrate the necessity of controls and balances for CEO’s. Professor Klaus-Peter Müller, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Commerzbank AG and Chairman of the Government Commission on the German Corporate Governance Code, shared his experiences in regards to corporate governance in Germany. Geoffroy Roux de Bezieux and Gilles Pélisson spoke about their individual experiences as entrepreneurs/CEOs and how they evolved to effectively operate in diverse, international environments.
All of the speeches and debates will be summarized in a white paper which will be available at the beginning of 2013.

The Council in relation to the first Forum

The Council on Business & Society’s inaugural Forum came to a successful close in an atmosphere full of enthusiasm with regards to the future of the alliance. The affable atmosphere was only reinforced by the announcement of the addition of a new member to the alliance: São Paulo Business Administration School of Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV – EAESP), a leading institution in Brazil, will join the original five schools in January 2013.
Additionally, in his closing speech, Dean Hirokazu Kono announced that Keio Business School will take up the torch and confirmed that the second edition of the Forum will take place in Japan in March 2014, on the subject of health economics.

Signing Ceremony of the new ESSEC Campus in Singapore

It was officially announced at the end of October that ESSEC will invest in a new building in Singapore. The work will start in February 2013 and the new facilities will be available for a new learning experience by end of 2014. ESSEC will build a five-storey building with 6,500 sqm built-in area on a 5,430 sqm plot on Nepal Hill in one-north Business Park.

"The construction of ESSEC dedicated facilities in Nepal Hill is a milestone in our international development. This will accelerate the real bi-continental character of the School, and will trigger its identity. While one third of the students are "international" today, in ten years from now even the word "international" will be forgotten, because of the bi or tri-continental identity. We are very proud to be part of the fascinating Asian Renaissance, and Singapore is an exceptional landmark to build our platform for Asia-Pacific." said Dr. Tapie, Dean and President of ESSEC Business School

To mark this important and historical moment with the official signature of the final agreement with the Singaporean authorities, a ceremony was organized in the presence of ESSEC’s alumni, students, academics and key partners of the project followed by a cocktail. The event and announcement to the press took place on Wednesday October 31st at noon at the ESSEC Asia Pacific campus in the National Library. Dr. Pierre Tapie, Dean and President of ESSEC Business School, and Prof. Herve Mathe, Dean of ESSEC Asia Pacific, warmly welcomed important partners and key figures such as Ambassador Burhan Gafoor, Chief Negotiator for Climate Change, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and former Ambassador of Singapore to France, Mr. Heah Soon Poh, Assistant CEO of JTC Corporation, Mr. Alvin Tan, Assistant Managing Director of EDB, Dr. Liu Thai Kher, Director of Raglan Squire and Partners, Mr. Daniel Wong, Vice President of PFS and Ms. Chew Fern Yap, Partner at Rajah & Tann, among others.

The new campus will give ESSEC a platform to engage Asia and Southeast Asia. And for Singapore, ESSEC will bring diversity and innovation to our higher education landscape. It will offer students from around Asia greater choice to pursue a global business education."
The new campus will be located in Nepal Hill, a strategic hub for leadership and talent development, in the same area as other business schools and universities, corporate universities and professional services companies in the talent development space.
"We are indeed happy that ESSEC, one of Europe’s leading business schools, is joining the one-north innovation community. Located in LINK@Nepal Hill, its Asia-Pacific campus will help grow the leadership development cluster at Nepal Hill and further strengthen the value proposition of Singapore as a global leadership development hub in Asia," said Mr. Heah Soon Poh, Assistant Chief Executive Officer of the Cluster Development Group, JTC Corporation.
Professor Herve Mathe, Dean of ESSEC Asia Pacific summarized this intention: "We want to be at this crossroads between Europe and Asia."

Celebrating 5 years of the ESSEC Leadership and Diversity Chair

What is your role in an evolving world?

The world is evolving and we are evolving with it. In 2012, the Chair changed its name to ESSEC Leadership and Diversity Chair fully recognizing the key role of responsible leadership in a world characterized by diversity in all its forms.

Be it cultural and religious diversity in global firms, gender quotas on corporate boards, or intergenerational diversity in an aging society with the generation Y entering the workforce, every kind of diversity has the potential to positively impact firm performance through responsible leadership.

In these times of economic, political and social crisis, it is more essential than ever to find new understandings and ways of creating value and doing business. In line with ESSEC’s values, responsibility and innovation guide the Chair’s research to respond to current challenges. Diversity constitutes an essential antecedent for managerial innovation and fostering organizational learning. Combining the practical experience of our two partner firms, Deloitte and L’Oreal, and our international network of diversity leaders and expert academic knowledge, we aim to promote leadership and diversity as a motor for innovation and societal change.

The ESSEC Leadership and Diversity Chair offers students a specialized program combining theoretical perspectives, practical knowledge acquired through presentations by professionals from Deloitte and L’Oréal, and hands-on experience through concrete projects with our partner firms.

During our six-month intensive program, students incorporate the importance of various kinds of diversity for the leadership of a firm, and also develop their own leadership styles during our MBTI and leadership workshops and through their projects. Their learning is put into practice in their presentations at the annual Chair conference before an audience of more than 250 professionals. The Chair gives a voice to tomorrow’s responsible leaders to show us their answers for the future.

Who we are
Created in 2007 with Air France, Deloitte and L’Oréal, the ESSEC Leadership and Diversity Chair is a think tank which promotes exchanges between researchers, business leaders and students in order to develop innovative perspectives and new approaches to leadership and diversity. Junko Takagi, Professor in Management, heads the Chair.

What we do

ESSEC Asia Pacific: Embracing the challenges of a fast growing region

In an increasingly global education market, ESSEC Business School is willing to grasp the challenges of rapid globalization and has undertaken a series of initiatives to expand its global reach. Higher education needs are expected to evolve significantly, especially in Asia (+70 million students expected from 2000 to 2015), faced with a new imperative that is to develop and train a strong pool of talented individuals, able to demonstrate creativity and address multicultural issues. As a leading institution in Europe, the core of ESSEC’s global strategy is now focused on accelerating its development in Asia Pacific.
For years, the school has historical partnership agreements with prestigious universities in the region such as Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, Keio University, Peking University, Seoul National University and in Singapore: National University of Singapore, Singapore Management University and Nanyang Technological University, in which it also has a dual degree agreement.
With its size and economically dynamic atmosphere, Asia Pacific is at the center stage of new managerial and development challenges. The Asia Pacific campus, strategically located in the vibrant city of Singapore, represents the perfect foothold for ESSEC Business School to respond to the increasing demand for management education in Asia.

delivers several top-notch academic programs and has already welcomed over 2,500 students and participants to
programs at its Asia Pacific campus. With the contribution of
and 2 Executive Directors, and under the impetus of Professor Hervé Mathe, Dean of ESSEC Asia Pacific, the school is driven to enhance management education by researching new concepts related to areas such as Innovation Strategies, Financial Modeling, Digital Marketing, Information Systems and the Digital Economy, Operations and Supply Chain Management, Real Estate Finance, Accounting and Management Control, among others.
The range of
available in Singapore has expanded over the years. The campus now offers, either totally or partially, full-time programs such as the Master of Science in Management, the Advanced Master in Strategy and Management of International Business, in Financial Techniques or in Logistics and Supply Chain Management, the Bachelor in Business Administration or the Global MBA. These enriching learning experiences highly contribute to benefit the students, being immersed in a multicultural environment and exposed to Asian business issues. Additionally, students in Singapore are often involved in corporate projects like the Asian Strategy Project, collaborating closely with professionals based in the region, particularly in China, India and Hong Kong.
ESSEC Asia Pacific is actively involved in developing close collaborations with companies in the region evidenced by mutual engagement to corporate related projects, career placement successes, and ground breaking research. This commitment has propelled the launch of three research institutes: The Institute for Research and Education on Negotiation (
), the Institute of Health Economics and Management (
) and the Institute for Service Innovation and Strategy (
). To encourage further sharing and exchange of knowledge, the school organizes regularly thematic events such as in December 2012, the
with Singapore Management University, and the Symposium on Globalization and the Return of Geography in partnership with ESSEC Center for Capitalism, Globalization, and Governance in February 2013.
In recent years, ESSEC Asia Pacific has been collaborating with regional and multinational companies as part of its
(e.g. Renault Samsung Motors, Shanghai Electrics or Medtronics and Clarins for Negotiation and Leadership). This year, ESSEC Asia-Pacific is launching a new series of
designed for professionals willing to develop their skills, expand their expertise and embrace new perspectives. Several workshops are scheduled in the coming months. For instance, ‘Negotiate Business Deals in China’ in June, ‘Marketing Analytics on Digital Platforms’ in September and “Strategizing Social Media Marketing” and “Luxury Brand Management” in October.
Today, ESSEC Asia Pacific aims to focus furthermore on the Asian market. The launch of a new range of Executive Education programs as well as the opening of the Asian Track of the Master of Science in Management in January 2013reflects well this intention.

A Partnership between HubTech 21 and ESSEC Ventures

ESSEC Ventures will venture into the Silicon Valley thanks to a new partnership with HubTech 21

A Partnership between HubTech 21 and ESSEC Ventures

ESSEC Ventures will venture into the Silicon Valley thanks to a new partnership with HubTech 21

Interview with Julien Morel, Executive Director of ESSEC Ventures
How would you describe the state of ESSEC Ventures today?
The entrepreneurship division of ESSEC has reached a phase of maturity. ESSEC Ventures is home to more than 60 start-up companies which are developed in our incubators each year. We have a network of 35 partners (investment funds, lawyers, consultants, coaches, etc.), venture capital funds which have invested seed capital in 15 ESSEC Ventures companies and the program is one of the most acclaimed at ESSEC.
Why the move to Silicon Valley?
Our start-up companies have very strong aspirations to be in Silicon Valley: more than half of the companies have a significant web division. Last year alone, no less than 3 companies left and set up camp in California (OneFeat, Bankin, and eLive) and the majority of the other companies would, at some point, like to develop their businesses in the U.S. This all ties in to our mission at ESSEC to allow our student entrepreneurs to have a global vision of business.
What is HubTech 21?
HubTech 21 is an accelerator for entrepreneurs who wish to develop their businesses in the U.S. In collaboration with Atelier BNP Paribas, they provide coaching and dedicated workspace to companies with high-tech projects. In addition, they also enable these start-ups to access the well-established “frenchy” network in Silicon Valley. HubTech 21 is also a partner of New Technology Venture Accelerator (NETVA), which is a program that provides personalized coaching, helps companies analyze their opportunities, and assists in the development of technology partnerships between France and the U.S.
What are the other international projects at ESSEC Ventures?
Development of our network and companies is Asia. With one of our campuses located in Singapore, this offers a perfect hub for growing and expanding in China and in BRICS. We are in discussion with the government on how to significantly augment our entrepreneurial presence. We also have other expansion projects in France where the entrepreneurial effervescence of ESSEC Ventures has the most impact.

2030, Imagination, Creativity, Innovation

These are the major themes that define the content of the back-to-school seminar for the ESSEC students in the Master of Science in Management program.

A unique formula for a creative start to the school year under the guidance of the President of the communication agency of the year in 2011, Nicolas Bordas of TBWA. “Stay hungry, stay foolish,” Steve Jobs liked to say. Why encourage young graduates to cultivate this “seed of madness” that they carry within them? Above all, how do we exercise imagination and creativity?
The 500 Master of Science in Management students took on the challenge of responding to these questions across four focus areas: the manager, the business, the city, or the citizen of 2030. The 2012 Imagination Week Trophy was awarded to the group of 5 students who garnered the highest number of votes on their project "Business in 2030.

ESSEC students win ‘The Negotiation Challenge - 2012

TNC 2012 trophy brought home by ESSEC students, competing against top 18 international business and law schools (Harvard, LBS, Kyoto, HHL, …)

TNC 2012 - Paris invited more than 70 applicants worldwide and 18 prestigious international business and law schools were shortlisted for the event. The event included the likes of Harvard Business School (US), University of California, Hastings Law School, London School of Business and Finance (UK), Kyoto Business School (Japan) and HHL, Leipzig (Germany). TNC running into its 5th year was first launched in 2007 by students and doctoral candidates from HHL and Harvard Law School. TNC is all about communication and mental acuity skills in a “real world” negotiation competition. This year’s event was organized by IESEG and HHL and was held in different locations and business settings in Paris like the ICC (International Chamber of Commerce), local cafeterias in Abbesses and Espace Montmartre.

Can you briefly describe the challenge?

The event was held over 2 days of intense negotiations. We had to deliberate on 4 business cases to get into the finals, the first being a 3-party individual negotiation and the other three being 2-party team negotiations. The performance of teams depended on a complex set of elements including
- Maximizing shares/profits for the business
- Finding win-win/creative solutions
- Communication abilities
- External judges’ evaluation
We consistently performed well in the qualification rounds and this helped us get to the final.

What was the ‘Uro crisis’?

The final round, between ESSEC (France) and HHL Liepzig (Germany) was to be the clincher. Our team represented a heavily indebted country, Greekonia seeking a restructuring of debt and the German team represented the Eur.. (sic) oops the United Union. We were to solve the ‘Uro crisis’. The objective was to maximize the interests of Greekonia but at the same time acknowledge the United Union’s concerns. Our strategy was simply to explain the constraints that our Government faced and to seal a debt restructuring deal in exchange for a fair increase in taxes.
A panel of judges consisting of top mediators, lawyers, scholars was to pick a team as winners. Our ability to honestly look at the other side’s concerns and successfully negotiate a deal that satisfied both the parties convinced the judges to consider us as the winners of the TNC 2012 cup.

What contributed to your victory?

The single most important factor was ‘continuous learning’. There were many teams with negotiation coaches and some teams were even coached by former winners of this challenge. Disregarding the absence of a coach, we provided constructive criticisms to each other. As most teams settled down to relax between the rounds, we negotiated furiously amongst ourselves on how we could improve as a team. Through continuous feedback, we were able to fine tune our approach through the qualification rounds and approach the finals confidently.
We had three extremely diverse personalities on our team who brought in different elements during each of the differently themed negotiation rounds. Our belief in each other’s decisions and acknowledging of each others personalities was developed through common courses and association activities. Another factor that we think was crucial in our success was our observation of each others contributions in class, thanks to the flexibility of our programs and common IMHI-MiM courses.
Satadru Chakraborty from the Therapeutic Innovation chair felt his Finance courses helped him reach decisions quickly and Sabyasachi Dutta dedicated the success to his courses in Brand management and CRM. Sriram Raghavan from the Leadership and Diversity chair felt that his experience with the Chair activities and courses contributed to this success.

What career plans do you have in store after this competition?

Each of us is at a different stage at ESSEC and are focussed on very different things at ESSEC. Sabyasachi is looking to work in the Hospitality sector in the Asia-Pacific region as he graduates this summer. Satadru, a first year MSc is looking for a company to sponsor his second year and intends to work in finance/strategy in a top pharmaceutical firm. Sriram, an apprentice at Sodexo plans to continue working in France in strategic business projects. But before graduating next year, he wishes to see an international conference or challenge organized at ESSEC.

2012 BCG Strategy Cup brought home by double-diploma team of ESSEC and Centrale Paris

Each year, the Boston Consulting Group brings together more than 150 teams from France’s most prestigious business and engineering schools to compete on two successive case studies

What is the BCG Strategy Cup?

This contest, which is organized annually by the strategy consulting firm The Boston Consulting Group, brings together more than 150 teams from all of France’s most prestigious business and engineering schools around two successive case studies. The first case study this year focused on Tupperware Nordics and strategies for improving the company’s sales. The second had to do with an opportunity for a major American wine group to buy a French winery.

Can you briefly describe your project and the major elements that helped you to win?

With the Tupperware case, we tried to be as thorough as possible and keep the full picture in mind, giving careful consideration to marketing just as much as finance and even management. We also tried to answer all of the questions in a balanced way so as not to limit ourselves to just those subjects that we were the most confident in.
For the final, we had a limited period of time in which we needed to make an acquisition recommendation for a client in the wine industry. We guessed that all of the finalist groups would probably have similar results for the analysis and calculations, which ended up being the case, so we spent a lot of time working on our core recommendations to be sure they were really convincing. Then we worked on recommendations that went beyond the subject at hand in order to stand out from our competitors.

Your team is made up of students from the double diploma program with ECP and ESSEC. In what ways do you think your experience with this program contributed to your victory?

It would be possible for the double diploma students to be accused of taking all of the same classes once they’ve arrived at ESSEC , and of having the same goals and aspirations. But in our case, the tracks at ESSEC are all very different. Jie and Jonathan are on the business finance track, Nicolas naturally leans more toward entrepreneurship, and Xavier follows the curriculum of the LVMH chair.
It’s this diversity of course tracks that allowed us to obtain a wide range of skills and approaches over our time at ESSEC and, which then contributed to giving our proposals a wider scope for the BCG Cup.

Once you have your double diploma in hand, what career plans do you have in store?

For our last year at Centrale, each of us is focusing on a different specialization: applied mathematics for Jie, energy for Jonathan, information systems for Nicolas, and industrial engineering for Xavier.
Even beyond the richness and range of these academic tracks, it’s their complementary nature that is most interesting to us; in a world where business problems are dealt with in an increasingly horizontal manner, technical competencies are naturally rounded out and enhanced by managerial knowledge.
We all hope to put this two-fold expertise to work in our chosen fields: financing for energy start-ups for Jonathan, branding in the wine industry for Xavier, business creation for Nicolas, and private equity for Jie.

The ESSEC Institute of Health Economics and Management (EIHEM) Asia Pacific was launched on the 7th of December 2011, at ESSEC Asia Pacific campus in Singapore.

With some 40 attendees, this unique initiative garnered strong support from the Singapore Economic Development Board, the French Embassy, and a number of global companies operating in the healthcare sector.

In his speech at the launch event, Prof Hervé Mathe, Dean of ESSEC Asia Pacific, spoke about how it was essential for European students and executives to learn about Asia, and how the Asian track provides them with valuable insights on the region.
ESSEC Asia Pacific is well placed to offer these educational programs to students and executives from the region, with the new range of Executive workshops to be launched in 2012.

December 2011 saw two inaugural events for ESSEC Asia Pacific. ESSEC IRENE Asia, the platform for exchange on negotiation between Asia and Europe, launched in March 2011, conducted its first regional program between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and ESSEC IRENE in December 2011. That same week, the ESSEC Institute for Health Economics and Management Asia Pacific successfully launched its program dedicated to an introduction to “Health Technology Assessment: definitions, objectives, methodologies and contributions to decision making processes”.

Prof Gérard de Pouvourville, Director of EIHEM, gave an enlightening lecture on health and education as universal primary goods, and their role as growth drivers in expanding economies such as Singapore and China.

Investments in healthcare need to be efficiently managed, and this is where ESSEC Business School, with its longstanding expertise in Healthcare Systems from Europe, is well placed to share its deep experience with diverse communities in the Asia Pacific region.

Dr Jeremy Lim, Executive Director of the Lien Centre for Palliative Care, Duke-NUS said at the event, “The needs in the region are enormous, and although there are numerous academic organizations developing programs in this field, the ESSEC initiative is most welcome”.

The Institute is thus offering another platform for exchanges between Europe and Asia, this one is dedicated to healthcare management and its many stakeholders. The executive programs and forums will be run in partnership with Fudan University in China and Keio University in Japan.

In 2012, ESSEC Asia Pacific will keep up its efforts to address the Asian market, to bring its expertise in Asia and to drive cutting-edge research with Asian insights with a launch of another Research Institute: the Institute of Global Logistics.

SMIB for Smiles is the first charity club of ESSEC Asia Pacific campus

Presentation

Its mission is to 1. Improve the education conditions of underprivileged children through concrete actions and 2. Increase interest & involvement in Social Enterprise and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) among students and partners.
Founded in 2011 by students of the Advanced Master in Strategy and Management of International Business (SMIB), the club’s objectives are as follow:

1. To set up partnerships with existing NGOs in the region and design with them a project on which SMIB for Smiles could be able to make a difference in the education of underprivileged children.

2. To enhance students’ team spirit, entrepreneurship and professionalism by developing and challenging SMIB for Smiles’ students’ management skills as well as their sense of effort and commitment.

3. To partner with both public and private actors through several aspects from collecting the needed resources for the charity projects, to building long lasting partnerships to increase students’ awareness.

As well, SMIB for Smiles’ team intends to promote ESSEC Business School in Asia in respect to the school’s core values of humanism, openness, responsibility and diversity. Its mission is fully in line with the school’s approach in preparing future managers to “reconcile personal interests with collective responsibility, giving consideration to the common good in their decision-making, and weighing economic challenges against the social costs”.

New Delhi 2012: our first project

SMIB for Smiles’ first action took place in New Delhi for two reasons:
1. India is a country where 80% of the population, i.e. 800 million people, lives below the poverty line set at US$2 a day by the United Nations. Since education is a key driver to get out of poverty, it became evident that India was a country where SMIB for Smiles could make a strong impact.
2. New Delhi was the destination of the 2012 SMIB Study Trip, and became therefore a good opportunity to involve the maximum number of students in such project.

Partnership with ‘Make A Difference’

The local NGO Make A Difference (MAD) was shortlisted and chosen for our first partnership in India, based on the quality of its education program, its reliability and the nature of project the students could carry.
Since 2006, MAD’s 1,200 volunteers had been providing quality education to more than 4,000 children between 6 and 14 years old, in shelters spread across 19 cities in India. Through their English program and Placement program (career awareness), MAD helps children to acquire English speaking and grammatical skills as well as the self-confidence necessary to believe in pursuing their education. With a new national initiative to implement libraries in every shelter in India, SMIB for Smiles set up the objective to provide them with 2 libraries for their New Delhi’s children.

Outcome of the awareness campaign

SMIB for Smiles’s successfully identified partners and sponsors for their awareness campaign. In only two months, the team collected more than 2,800 English children & teens’ books, as well as computers, printers and projectors among others, and gathered enough funds to rehabilitate and decorate both future libraries. Through a partnership with commercial airlines transporting the students to New Delhi, more than a ton of material was carried in India at no cost!

Library set up during the study trip

The Study Trip gathered a first batch of 45 students coming from France in Bach Chon’s shelter the first week, and a second batch of 60 students coming from Singapore in Arya’s shelter the second week. Their actions happened in the same way and at weekly intervals:
With their arms full of books, the students arrived at both shelters in the early afternoon and were divided in smaller groups to animate workshops with the children. Drawing, Dancing, initiation to French language and Olympic Games are among the activities that all fully enjoyed during this enriching afternoon. At the end of the day, it was difficult to say who had the most fun! At the same time, others students helped SMIB for Smiles teams to set up the libraries. Cleaning, painting, assembling… The work was different but not less entertaining!

SMIB for Smiles’ sustainability

The SMIB students who attended the Study Trip in Delhi were all delighted and benefited from SMIB for Smiles work and efforts. They all got the chance to share precious moments with the shelters’ children, which sooner or later will positively influence their personal life and decisions.
SMIB for Smiles’ first achievement is only the beginning of a long series. Next September, the team will help the new batch of SMIB students to take over this wonderful club and ensure its continuity.

With your support, SMIB for Smiles hope that the club will continue to develop further partnerships and create new opportunities to increase its reach and widen its impact improving the education conditions of underprivileged children and raising awareness in Social Enterprise and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

The project "Mathematics and Economics", in partnership with 4 Parisian Universities, is among the 72 winners of the LABEX competition

Laurent Wauquiez, Minister of Higher Education and Research announced the winners of the last call for LABEX (Laboratories for Excellence) competition.
The LABEX project "Mathematics and Economics" (MME-DII) led by the University of Cergy (THEMA), in partnership with ESSEC, University Paris 13, University of Nanterre and University of Paris 2, counts among the 72 winners of the last call for tenders by the ANR (National Research Agency).
The "Mathematics and Economics" project gathered 20 professors from various fields (Economics, Finance, Marketing, Information Systems and Operations Management) under the coordination of Professor Arnaud Lefranc (Economist, University of Cergy).
For ESSEC Business School, the participation to this LABEX is a label of excellence delivered by the French Higher Education and Research Administration that will support applications for further grants. It recognizes the excellence of our research in a relatively narrow field (quantitative analysis).
The selected Laboratories will receive significant funding to increase their international visibility, to compete better with international universities and labs, to attract renowned researchers and faculty and to build an integrated research policy.

Singapore will play a key role in helping a French space company launch its first commercial space flight.

For starters, home-grown companies will be roped in by Astrium, the space arm of French aerospace giant European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company, to build and launch the 'demonstrator' model of the space plane by the end of the year.

Next month, Master of Business Administration (MBA) students from four business schools here will compete to come up with the best business model for the space plane operator.

Astrium, which aims to launch its first commercial space flight by 2017, is turning to Singapore because of the Republic's 'significant potential' to grow space tourism, said the firm's Asia representative, Mr Martin Robillard, on Thursday.

He was speaking on the sidelines of the two-day Global Space & Technology Convention here which ends today.

Mr Robillard disclosed that Astrium is 'finalising deals' with Singapore companies to design and build the small-scale demonstrator space plane, which will be about 3m to 4m long.

It is understood that a deal is likely to be inked at next week's Singapore Airshow.

As part of the agreement, the expertise of local researchers and engineers will be tapped to design the avionics of the space plane and test its aerodynamics and glide capability.

The demonstrator space plane will have no engines, unlike the actual aircraft which will use turbofan engines as well as a rocket engine. The test flight by the year-end will thus require a helicopter to lift the demonstrator model about 3km off the ground, and then drop it to see how it glides.

Astrium has not disclosed where it will base its fleet of space planes but Singapore's Changi Airport has been marked as a possibility. If the plans do take off, it could rival British billionaire Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic, which is to launch the world's first commercial space flight next year.

Already, the British space-tourism airline has sold nearly 500 tickets worldwide, with nine being bought by customers here. They include a Singaporean businessman, his wife and two children who reportedly paid US$1 million (S$1.2 million) for four seats on the historic flight.

Passengers on the Astrium space plane, which can take up to four passengers and a pilot, will have to pay about €200,000 (S$330,000) each for an hour-long ride that includes 10 minutes of weightlessness.

MBA students from Essec, Insead, the National University of Singapore and the Singapore Management University might just have a say in how Astrium's business will be run. Their plans will have to include the costs of building and maintenance of the space planes, as well as the recruitment of pilots.

They will be judged by Astrium's executives, as well as top executives from Singapore's Economic Development Board, ST Aerospace and the Singapore Space and Technology Association (SSTA).

Mr Jonathan Hung, SSTA's president, said this is a 'perfect opportunity' to showcase Singapore's new generation of top business minds and promote space tourism in Singapore.

"The Right Sensory Mix", book by Diane Derval

Finalist of the Berry-AMA Prize for best marketing book 2011

"The Right Sensory Mix" finalist of the Berry-AMA Prize for best marketing book 2011

Product preferences are determined in the womb.
Berry-AMA Book Award finalist Diana Derval turns marketing on its head.
Chicago (MMD Newswire) November 1, 2011 - Researcher Diana Derval, founder and president of the international firm DervalResearch, has never been afraid of controversy. And that's a good thing, because the science that is her life's work has been known to stir up debate in scientific and marketing circles alike. In the eternal dispute over the influence of nature versus nurture, Professor Derval's findings come down pretty clearly on the side of nature. Her investigations have uncovered startling evidence of the profound and lasting influence of prenatal exposure to hormones - particularly sex hormones - on people's likes and dislikes, their sensory reactions to the world around them, and the decisions they make.
Professor Derval has made this research accessible and understandable in her acclaimed book, "The Right Sensory Mix: Targeting Consumer Product Development Scientifically" (Springer, 2010), which has been making waves not only in the field of neuroscience, but also in the marketing world, for the past year and a half. And now "The Right Sensory Mix" has been named finalist for the Berry-American Marketing Association (AMA) prize for Best Marketing Book 2011. Previous finalists for the award include highly praised titles such as; "Blue Ocean Strategy: How to Create Uncontested Market Space and Make Competition Irrelevant," by W. Chan Kim & Renee Mauborgne (2007); "The Long Tail: Why the Future of Business is Selling Less of More," by Chris Anderson (2007), and "Purple Cow," by Seth Godin (2005).The results were announced on October 30.
"I am very honored to be one of the four finalists of the Berry-AMA Book Prize," says Professor Derval, "'The Right Sensory Mix' builds a bridge between science and business and this distinction encourages me and my team to keep on researching human physiology and behavior." The prestigious Berry-AMA prize recognizes books whose groundbreaking ideas have had a significant impact on marketing and related fields. The judges for the Berry-AMA Award are eminent marketing professionals and academics; this year's panel included Richard Lutz, jcpenney Professor of Marketing (University of Florida), Erik Gordon (University of Michigan), Gordon Wyner (Millward Brown Inc.), and Valarie Zeithaml (University of North Carolina).
Behavioral neuroendocrinology, one of Professor Derval's areas of expertise, is the science that studies the interactions between the nervous and endocrine (hormonal) systems and behavior. Professor Derval's research, based upon thousands of measurements in over 25 countries since 2007, reveals that prenatal exposure to estrogen and testosterone not only has a direct impact on physical traits and behavior, but on sensory perception and product preferences as well. "We have discovered that people's product preferences are directly linked to the millions of sensors monitoring their body and brain." she says. "The number and distribution of these sensors is greatly influenced by prenatal hormones so that it is possible to predict favorite colors, tastes, scents, shapes, textures, and sounds, almost from the womb."
While it is also true that hormonal fluctuations throughout the normal life cycle can significantly affect mood and behavior - and people's individual experiences undoubtedly have an effect on some of their likes and dislikes - prenatal hormonal exposures appear to have a profound and lasting influence on many basic preferences and reactions to stimuli. Yet it is easy to see why the information in "The Right Sensory Mix" has created controversy. After all, experts in many fields believe that environmental influences such as home life and education have a more profound effect on tastes, behavior, and decision making than biological factors.
Moreover, Professor Derval's research adds a layer of complexity to gender identity, which is often a sensitive area anyway, introducing "gender polymorphisms" and the first physiological segmentation model, the Hormonal Quotient®(HQ). "Similarly to what exists in many animal species, we have identified eight gender polymorphisms among humans based on the prenatal influence of hormones - four in male and four in female. We can identify the gender polymorphism, or what we call the Hormonal Quotient® (HQ), of an individual based on the gender, ethnicity, and different biomarkers. "Consumers are unique individuals but they are also predictable," Prof Derval explains. "Their preferences and behavior are directly linked to their Hormonal Quotient® (HQ).
The research has yielded a range of fascinating and useful results about consumer preferences. "We know for instance that women with a testosterone-driven HQ are mainly super-inhalers, more sensitive to synthetic fragrances and very likely to prefer fruity scents whereas women with an estrogen-driven HQ are more of medium-inhalers and tend to enjoy floral scents."
The gender stereotypes of old are falling away, and of course no one literally believes that little girls are made of sugar and spice or that boys are made of snails and puppy dog tails. Nor does anyone literally accept as true that women are from Venus and men are from Mars. At the same time there's been a great deal of research about the influence of testosterone on men, and estrogen on women, but the influence of testosterone on women and the influence of estrogen on men have been less documented." In "The Right Sensory Mix" each types of men and women, whether they are testosterone, very-testosterone, balanced or estrogen, are studied in considerable detail.
DervalResearch has shed light on the preferences of testosterone-driven women, estrogen-driven women, and a range of other "gender polymorphisms" - and the company has even devised a way to segment and predict consumers based on their "gender polymorphisms" with the proprietary Hormonal Quotient ® (HQ) profiles, which can be determined with a simple test anyone can take.
DervalResearch has also created a series of geographical research tools to help global brands zero in on their target consumers' preferences. One such tool is the firm's series of Sensory GeoMaps ™, which pinpoint the sensory perceptions of consumers in local markets. "We have found that sensory perception varies between geographical areas," says Professor Derval. "For example, Chinese people will be mainly nearsighted and be relaxed by short-wave colors like blue, whereas Australians are almost all farsighted and are relaxed by long-wave colors like red. To help companies adapt their products and services to each country, or decide which emerging market they should focus most of their efforts on, we have built Sensory GeoMaps™ for over 50 countries, detailing the sensory perceptions of consumers in each area."
Professor Derval new approach to marketing has been adopted by a wide range of industries - food and beverage, electronics, luxury items, fashion, cosmetics, automotive, pharmaceuticals, advertising, leisure, and tourism, to name but a few - who already benefit from knowing their consumers' HQ to design the right products, harmonize their product range, and increase their innovation hit rate.
"The Right Sensory Mix" includes a multitude of these business cases from Sofitel, Red Bull, Nintendo, and has received acclaim from many respected marketing professionals, such as Philip Kotler, the S.C. Johnson & Son Professor of International Marketing at the Kellogg School of Management. Professor Kotler said, "Diana Derval has written the best book that I have seen on the critical role of the five senses in determining our brand preferences. Her writing is lively, full of relevant case studies, and rich in insights. No marketing department or new product department must proceed without first reading this book."
Wai Wong, Marketing Manager Accessories at Sephora Paris, said, "Thanks to her discovery concerning the relationship between hormones and sensory sensitivity, Diana Derval proposes an amazing scientific approach to accurately profile consumers, according to their Hormonal Quotient®(HQ)."
Beyond neuroendocrinology, Professor Derval's work has contributed to a fascinating - and again, slightly controversial - area called neuromarketing, which combines advanced neuroscience with market research. Her findings target hormonal influences on all of the senses: vision, touch, taste, smell, hearing, and proprioception (the ability to sense our own movement and position). And it's not just about helping firms deliver the best consumer experience; Professor Derval emphasizes the importance of understanding physiological mechanisms and not only for business purpose "Ernest Starling (1866-1927), Nobel Prize and discoverer of the first hormone, brilliantly formulated that "The physiology of today, is the medicine of tomorrow."'Her research will surely make it easier to adapt medical, public, and private services to individuals - whether they're Martian, Venusian, or just your everyday Earthlings.
# # # About DervalResearch: DervalResearch is the only market research firm able to predict consumers' sensory perceptions, purchasing behavior, and product preferences based on their physiological profile and Hormonal Quotient® (HQ). Operating worldwide, the firm has helped leading brands including Philips, Sofitel, Sephora, and Sara Lee, design the right sensory mix for their target consumers, evaluate the opportunities for emerging markets, and increase their innovation hit rate. - For more information see the DervalResearch web site, www.derval-research.com. - Read more about the Hormonal Quotient® (HQ) and take a fun test online here: http://www.derval-research.com/archive/2009/12/16/calculate-your-hormonal-quotient-by-dervalresearch.html - Take the 5mn book tour here: http://www.derval-research.com/archive/2011/10/27/the-right-sensory-mix-book-tour.html - For more information about Sensory GeoMaps see http://www.derval-research.com/sensory-geomap - Join the conversation on The Right Sensory Mix Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Right-Sensory-Mix/123804197658095

The Chair of Therapeutic Innovation has a clean bill of health!

Since its creation in 2003 by Professor Gregory Katz...

Since its creation in 2003 by Professor Gregory Katz, the Therapeutic Chair of Innovation has been supported by Sanofi-Aventis, the most generous sponsor of the ESSEC development campaign.

As of January 1st 2012, the Chair will be supported by three new partners: Roche (world leader in personalized medicine), Celgene (world leader in cell therapy) and GlaxoSmithKline biologicals (world leader in vaccines).
“These eight years with Sanofi were particularly intense and fertile” explains Professor Gregory Katz. “We are proud to see the Chair bounce back thanks to the support of three enterprises with a clear commitment to disruptive technologies that are liable to effectively combat disease, with a single purpose: to prolong patients’ lives.” This renewal is also a recognition of the work accomplished by the Chair, its team, its students, its teaching model and its research – a Chair whose funding will have brought ESSEC close to 4 million euros by 2015.
Since its creation in 2003, the ESSEC Chair of Therapeutic Innovation aims to meet two objectives:

1/ train future health industry decision makers in innovation management;

develop strategic analyses to transform therapeutic disruptive technologies into economic and social progress.

Each year, the Chair welcomes international graduate and post-graduate students from a wide variety of backgrounds seeking to steer their career towards the healthcare sector. In addition to its teaching activities, the Chair conducts socio-economic studies and strives to create a stimulating laboratory of ideas, a space for free forward thinking on the impact that these biomedical innovations will have over the next decade.

« The potential of Qualitative Research : Four Approaches Shedding Light on IS Practice ».

This article, co-written with ESSEC research student Julien Malaurent, discusses
various qualitative research carried out by David and colleagues assessing
information systems projects at a Danish bank, outsourcing relationships of a UK/US pharmaceutical company, purchasing decisions of surrogate users on the Internet, and post-implementation problems experienced by a Chinese joint-venture of a French multinational corporation. It highlights the potential value of such research to organizations.

David Avison is Distinguished Professor of Information Systems (IS) at ESSEC Business School (since 2000) and was previously professor in the Department of Management at Southampton University.
He was president of the Association for Information Systems 2008-2009, and has served as joint editor-in-chief (with Guy Fitzgerald) of Information Systems Journal since its first issue in 1990.
David has over twenty-five books are to his credit including, most recently, the text Information Systems Project Management (with Reza Torkzedah) (Sage) and the well-used text Information Systems Development: Methodologies, Techniques and Tools (with Guy Fitzgerald) (4th ed. McGraw-Hill).
He served as chair of the International Federation of Information Processing WG8.2 (Impact of IS/IT on Organizations and Society).
He was honoured with the IFIP Silver Core and more recently with the Fellowship of the AIS. He also served as president of the UK Academy for Information Systems. His article Action Research: Making Academic Research Relevant (D. Avison, F. Lau, M. Myers, P. Nielsen) Comm.

THE BELGIAN CRISIS

“Three questions for ...” Alain Lempereur, Professor at ESSEC, specializing in negotiations and leadership

The crisis in Belgium has just passed the one-year mark. Are there any new prospects ?
As long as the problems continue to be posed in such restricted terms as they are today, we can’t expect any new prospects. Belgium is dying and everyone seems to be hesitating about what should be done. Some refuse to administer the drastic cure required if we are to hope for a recovery, while others denounce aggressive life-support and are requesting euthanasia. Negotiations are taking place in a glass of water, while there is an ocean of incomprehension between the Flemings and the Walloons. I have been calling for major negotiations for months. But the debate is dominated by pettiness and the negotiations underway are a permanent object of ridicule.
Nor the last mediator, Wouter Beke, nor Elio Di Rupo has no room for manoeuvre as long as his mandate does not assume the reality of a centrifugal Belgium for the last hundred years. One must either proclaim the end of Belgium, or revive it. To let it rot is not a solution. To keep Belgium in a vegetative state is a denial of the problem and a denial of democracy. It is high time to change the very nature of the negotiations, rather than to change negotiators.

What role can the European Union play in resolving the crisis ?
Europe is afraid. If Belgium – one of the founding states of the European Communities, which could also be seen as a miniature Europe – imploded, wouldn’t that open the door to all the secessionists and prove without a doubt that Europe has no future? But Europe has no reason to be afraid. Belgium is a nation state at its last gasp. It is time that Europe takes its responsibilities in this matter because, mistakenly, we think the problem in this city insoluble. In fact, why not finally constitute a “Brussels, District of Europe”? Why not accept the principle of a city state with its own tax system?

Would Wallonia be a viable state alongside Flanders ?
If I am not mistaken, there are five member countries of the European Union with a population less than Wallonia’s. Nobody ever took umbrage at their size. However, the question of the institutional future of Wallonia must be decided by the Walloons, perhaps in association with Brussels. A “Wallonia-Brussels” community has just been formed, in fact, and could assume jurisdiction. One could even imagine various forms of tie-ups with France. But the citizens of France and their representatives must assume their responsibilities in the matter if the question is posed. Here again, the prospect of major negotiations is light years away from the pitiful spectacle of the current Belgian crisis.

Personality of the month: Patrick McGoldrick, CEO of Tata Technologies

ESSEC Singapore was recently delighted to receive Patrick McGoldrick, Tata Technologies current CEO. As part of the largest corporate group in India and World leader in Automotive and Aerospace Engineering and Design, Tata Technologies Limited has a bright future to look forward to. Let’s have Mr McGoldrick‘s insights on Tata Technologies, its employees and conclude with a focus on his career.

AsiaConnect: Can you tell us about a Tata project that you were the most proud of given its success?

Patrick McGoldrick: Tata NANO became a successful Tata project because it was about a vision: offer an affordable car (i.e. 2000 USD) to Indian families. It showed that technology is not a problem but putting it together to meet the customer needs by challenging a bunch of young people and by giving them the required resources is what made this project successful.
AsiaConnect: Innovation is the key to success in this industry. How do you boost innovation within the company?

Patrick McGoldrick: We organize a competitionevery year where employees presenttheir innovations that will be judged by outsiders. The winners selected go to a larger Tata regionalcompetitionto be judged and then, reach the finals. As they come up with very innovative ideas applicable to our services, it helps boost our competitiveness.

AsiaConnect: During the financial crisis your total revenue logically went down but at the same time your profits increased. How did you managed to overcome the situation?

Patrick McGoldrick: We took a global initiative to decrease dramatically our operating costs. We identified 11 levers of profitability and improved significantly our efficiency in just one year, while most companies can only do so in several years without a sense of urgency. For instance, we renegotiated our rents to decrease the costs in facilities; we globalized and integrated accounting, HR, legal costs, etc.

AsiaConnect: What challenges is Tata Technologies facing today?

Patrick McGoldrick: One of our main challenges is to go from a people-based management to a process-based one. In other words, I don’t think we can get to 6,000 people if we don’t have really good processes. We also want to continually bring young people from schools into the system and retain them by creating a challenging and exciting environment and give them fun things to work on.

AsiaConnect: Tata Technologies is already well developed abroad with offices in many different countries. What are the advantages and the challenges to be present locally?

Patrick McGoldrick: We believe that we have a strong commitment to the community we serve and we mostly hire local people for our local offices. Indeed, it is essential that our employees develop an intimate relationship with clients and have a deep understanding of the language and the culture of the country they work in. Thus, for every country we are in the local people represent more than 70% of the workforce.
Each country has a local board of directors that will make decisions and take appropriate actions without consulting with the headquarters first. Then they disclosuretheir decisions and how they dealt with the issue. We call this philosophy: “empowerment with disclosure”.
AsiaConnect: Are cultural differences a main issue? Can you tell us some differences between Indian and Western types of management?

Patrick McGoldrick: Tata Technologies was founded in Singapore, yet we have a major presence in the Indian market and our parent company is in India. We have found it more efficient to run our companies who operate outside of India from Singapore rather than India. Singapore is fast, efficient and open to foreign companies and cultures.

India along with most of Asia has been growing faster than the West. I find the young people in India amazingly excited about the future. People working in the knowledge industry in India expect extremely large growth rates, both personally and for their companies. The wage cost is a real issue as well. Senior management in India can bemore costly for a firm than US or European senior management. Nowadays you can get talent witha global perspective.

AsiaConnect: Tata Technologies launched its own centralized brand around the world in 2009, giving up its subsidiaries brands INCAT and iKnowledge Solutions. Can you explain this decision?

PM: In the beginning of 2005 we asked our customers and subsidiaries whether they wanted to operate under Tata name or continue to use their existing names. They refused because their clients were used to their brands.
In the following years Tata announced the acquisition of Corus, Jaguar Land Rover and launched Nano Car, enhancing its visibility and credibility all over the world. Our subsidiaries and their customers realized that they could benefit from integrating into one global enterprise under the Tata brand.

AsiaConnect: How do you develop a common corporate culture in a large and diverse company like Tata?

Patrick McGoldrick: As for me, the smartest thing we have done is the creation of a common business excellence model, called the Tata Business Excellence Model (TBEM). This model is based on the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award from US. Today, everyone in Tata speaks a common language when it comes to business excellence. We try to give responsibilities in TBEM to our young bright people. In Tata Technologies we have internet based learning tools that give every employee a common understanding of our company and way of doing things. The Tata group has also adopted a mentoring program under the TBEM where every company CEO gets a mentor from within the group. Within the Tata group the TBEM framework providesexternal assessment of Tata companies, recognition and awards, and for providing feedback to applicants.

AsiaConnect: How diverse is Tata Technologies in terms of gender, nationality and background? Are you recruiting young graduates or is a previous experience in the sector necessary?

Patrick McGoldrick: Women are still under-represented in the top 10 management but we would like to have more!Tata Technologies has a broad mix of nationalities, in our offices, delivery centers, and top management. You will find people from US, Canada, Mexico, UK, Germany, France, Netherlands, Italy, India, China, Thailand, Japan, Korea and Singapore to name a few. Moreover, most of our employees come from an engineering background. While we have lateral hires, we prefer torecruit young graduates directly from University. For the young European graduates, we mainly offer internships in India.

AsiaConnect: How did your background help you in building your career path? How did you build your leadership in order to be the CEO of such an important company?

Patrick McGoldrick: I worked as a practicing engineer for 11 years and worked on engineeringprojects mostly in nuclear weapons development. I have always beenwilling to travel anywhere and do any kind of job and it helped a lot!Attending Harvard was a big plus; It helped me feel more confident about what I was doing.

AsiaConnect: Do you have some advice for ESSEC students in building their career plan?

PM: You should be open: don’t say no, don’t have a fixed idea and be open to any opportunity because that’s what may click!
A Special thanks to Antoine Dumortier who helped me in conducting the interview and Mr. Pat McGoldrick who had the patience to answer our questions.

Access to the corporate world is played in an increasingly international perspective mainly for 2...

ESSEC Singapore Career Center developed a successful ESSEC Mentoring Program

Access to the corporate world is played in an increasingly international perspective mainly for 2 reasons: students wishing to work beyond the borders of their home countries and multinationals offer programs where mobility is a pre-requisite. Hyper competition is becoming a reality even at graduate level.
In this context a degree no longer makes the difference especially because the value is not always recognized abroad (lack of comparable), so preparation is very important. In this context, how to support students confronting the challenge of accessing the corporate world in a new cultural environment?

To answer this question, Singapore campus developed ESSEC Mentoring Programin November 2010. Its launching in Singapore has been a real success with 12 mentors enrolling spontaneously in November and another 20+ in February 2011.
"It's great, I had the impression of being helpful. I met several students to tell them about my job without expecting a position, "said one mentor in the mentoring meeting of February 21, 2011.

Early March 2011, our local Alumni President, Francois Rameau, launched the mentoring in Hong Kong. In the week following his email, 10 new mentors joined the program.

After this first experience, more than 2/3 of the mentees would be recommended for an internship or a job and the satisfaction rate exceeded 85%. It is a true success for mentees, mentors and for the School. “Like the mentees I am becoming more enthusiastic since they nailed their first interviews, I realize that I learnt a lot myself and on how to fine tune the skills required to succeed in interviews” said a mentor.

Mentors saw more professionalism and a real progress in the way ESSEC Singapore students are prepared compared to local peers. It is undeniable that the ESSEC Mentoring Program will give an added value on the short and long term.

While my extensive knowledge of the legal arena was welcome for job positions where legal aspects count (...)

Current position : Private banker at Bank Julius Baer & Co. Ltd., in Singapore (4 years)
Previous experience : Junior tax advisor at the Head office of SG Private Banking (affiliate of SociétéGénérale Group) in Paris (6 months)
Background : Master of Laws (Indiana University),Master of Business Law (Dauphine University), MS SMIB (ESSEC)

AsiaConnect: How did you use your law/business background to land your job and which are the sectors searching for this dual competency?

Franck Litzler: While my extensive knowledge of the legal arena was welcome for job positions where legal aspects count, it is my command of business concepts such as marketing or international finance which enabled me to get to interviews and to nail my job.

Nowadays, students who graduate from a Law Degree only have access to positions where legal expertise is the key. Those who graduate from a Business Degree afterwards open doors to many jobs where speaking comfortably in public and drafting properly matter as well as having been exposed to business issues. Therefore, the financial industry offers different options such as positions in the legal department, the marketing department, short term sales related positions, or management of a relationship with business partners/clients of the bank in the long run. Law firms themselves increasingly love students with a dual business/law competency.

Law students who ended their studies with a Business Degree should always emphasize their developed reasoning capabilities, and outstanding drafting and presentation skills.

AsiaConnect: How did you get your current job and could you share some tips with us?

Franck Litzler: I applied spontaneously directly to the company.
Within the industry you wish to join, target the smaller players, because their Singapore entity will be small enough to get access to management more efficiently.

AsiaConnect: What does it mean to be a private banker at Julius Baer?

Franck Litzler: I speak to customers every single hour. In one day, I may have spoken to 50 people, whereas in many jobs one only speaks to his 5 to 10 closest colleagues / business partners a day.
Issues are always very short term. Maximum delay to deliver an answer is a few days. There is no 3-month, complex and elaborated project in my job.
Any career in my company is in the long term. You can’t rush it, no matter how good you are. This comes from the fact that our company behaves like a big family, not a framework gathering efficient individuals.

AsiaConnect: As the Singapore Alumni’s Vice President, what are your expectations and plans for the coming year?

Franck Litzler: Because easy going networking evenings are essential but not enough, we are starting from scratch various Programs that we want to last over time, from a Mentoring Program provided by Alumni to current students, to a much increased dialogue and sharing of resources with other Chapters of ESSEC Alumni abroad and with other Alumni Associations of leading Business Schools in Singapore.

AsiaConnect: Do you have any message for the current ESSEC students?

Franck Litzler: Preparation is the key to success. If you’re prepared, success is not an achievement but merely a consequence.
Special thanks to RemiFeuillassier who conducted the interview and Franck Litzler who took the time to answer to our questions.

“As a consultant you need to deliver, deliver, deliver!”

Philippe Askew, Business Consulting Senior Manager in Schlumberger, Singapore and Thailand interviewed by Asia Connect

Nationality : Australian

Current Position : Business Consulting Senior Manager in Schlumberger, Singapore and Thailand Previous experience

Background : Engineering School – Virignia Darden MBA

Can you highlight the key advantages of your experience ?
Based on my experience, I can say that having an expertise helps you inprofessional projects, besides increasing your credibility. On the other hand, general management is a tough experience but a good school, since you are dealing with real products, real people and real problems. Also, being a senior manager in SBC is a very different experience from what I have known in Carrier-Toshiba. I believe that consultants are easy to manage, but you need to trust them and give them the freedom to learn and grow.
What advice would you give to young graduate students?
Take your time! Many people, especially from the “Generation Y”, are eager to progress quickly on their career track. They often ask for promotion before displaying their caliber in the company. You rather should be professional, make suggestions, go the extra-mile and deliver, deliver, deliver! Then, do not worry: you will be rewarded! Moreover, think in terms of long-term value. Not only the long-term value for the company you are working for, but also long-term value for yourself. You could probably derive this value from money, satisfaction, family orwork-life balance. It can be useful to make a plan of what you will do in five years from now, but be prepared to deviate from the path you have planned.
What should those who want to work in consulting know?
First, let me emphasize the fact that consulting is only one track you can follow after your Advanced Master, but there are many other successful tracks. For example, entrepreneurship is probably the toughest track, but you can make good money…in the end! The satisfaction you gain from being an entrepreneur will also be extremely rewarding. By the way, for those who are interested in a career in Entrepreneurship - keep your prices up and be aware of financial issues. The consulting industry is growing in Asia, which offers plenty of opportunities. But beware, consulting follows the economic cycles. For those interested in such a career, keep in mind that an experience in a reputed consulting firm can be a big plus for your future career. Also consider that succeeding in the selection process of a consultancy is a skill in itself, so practice enough before applying.
Special thanks to Thibaud Vaucouleur and Kenza Lahlou who conducted the interview and Mr. Philip Askew who took the time to answer our questions.

Essec Business School, France, wins Strategy Case Competition at IESE Business School, Spain

Barcelona, Spain – Saturday - 26th February 2011

Essec Business School, France, wins Strategy Case Competition at IESE Business School, Spain with support from French non-profit Acting for Life

Barcelona, Spain – Saturday - 26th February 2011

4 students representing Essec Business School have won the Doing Good & Doing Well (DGDW) Case Competition conducted by IESE Business School and supported by McKinsey & Co, Endeavour, INSEAD and UnLtd foundation. The Case Competition involving top European Business schools was held at IESE’s annual DGDW conference on Social Responsibility attended by MBA students, international NGOs, Social Entrepreneurs and Corporate Executives.

The Competition was aimed at providing solutions to real challenges that 5 social businesses are facing today. Each team analysed the problems of one distinct social venture and presented their recommendations. The jury unanimously decided in favour of Team Essec and their strategic action plan for Swift Wash, a mechanized laundry unit and an economic rehabilitation centre for trafficked victims located at Goa in West India.

Supported by Acting for Life and the PPR Foundation for Women’s Dignity and Rights, Swift Wash was created four years ago by Arz, an Indian activist association committed to anti-trafficking, which has successfully rehabilitated and provided psychosocial assistance to 200 trafficked victims. Despite having such commendable social impact, the laundry business had operational and financial challenges to overcome to become sustainable.

“The winning factor of the team was the fact that they worked out a long term plan that not only tackled the business problems but also addressed the larger social issue” says Jean-Marc Thiébaut, Program Officer for Acting for Life, who mentored the Franco-Indian Essec team for three weeks before the competition, in the framework of a partnership with the Institut de l’Innovation et de l’Entrepreneuriat Social (IIES).

Anwesha Ghosh, Alexandre Durrive, Irene Stolz and Sriram Raghavan, members of the Net Impact - ESSEC chapter, jointly explain – “From the beginning Jean-Marc reminded us of the challenge ahead: 2.3 million trafficked victims in India. The 200 victims rehabilitated were not enough when compared to the problem in hand. We proved that, by implementing a targeted operational plan, Swift Wash could reach sustainability within one year. But how would a local NGO go beyond this? Having this as a model for change, we suggested moving towards a nationwide initiative. To bring NGOs like Swift Wash together under one common goal, one common vision, and as one entity, we recommended developing an Anti-Sex Trafficking Index. This would enable anti-trafficking NGOs to measure their social impact in a unique and more meaningful way, with the credibility to attract and retain funding. Building on the movement further, a body could be formed that would bring the benefits of a nationwide entity. We look forward to following up on the project and providing assistance to help it see the light of the day.”

Two alumni ESSEC was distinguished for the 36th edition of the César (French movie award) : Antoine Rein ( E94) and Fabrice Goldstein ( E95), producers of the movie " Le nom des gens ", were rewarded by two César (best scenario original, best actress) on Friday, February 25th

The producers, Antoine Rein ( E94) and Fabrice Goldstein ( E95), are two alumni of ESSEC. Antoine and Fabrice had already been distinguished, they have already won a César and an Oscar in 2008 for a short film, “le Mozart des Pickpockets”.
About the movie “Le nom des gens” : Bahia Benmahmoud, a young woman, has a high opinion of the political commitment : she doesn’t hesitate to sleep with her enemies to convert them to her cause – which can make a lot of people. In general, she obtains good results. Until the day she meets Arthur Martin, discreet person in his forties, follower of the zero risk. She told herself that with this name, he is necessarily a little fascist. But names are deceitful and the appearances are misleading...

To meet societal needs that neither public services nor the logic of the market can fully satify, it is imperative to find innovative solutions to serve people in the North as well as in the South.
Social entrepreneurship, corporate citizenship, corporate social responsibility, "Base of the pyramid", Philanthropy, equal opportunities, responsible investment, measuring the social impact are the basis for systemic changes.
Listen to the podcasts featuring discussions, interviews and conferences, produced by the Institute for Innovation and Social Entrepreneurship (IIES) and the Centre for Social Innovation (CSI) at Stanford Graduate School of Business.
Supported by MACIF, MAIF, the Caisse d'Epargne, the ERDF and many other project partners, the Institute for Innovation and Social Entrepreneurship, led by Thierry Sibieude, Professor at ESSEC, consists of a team of 20 people that positions ESSEC Business School as the world's largest academic center dedicated to teaching and research on social innovation and social entrepreneurship.

35 per cent of the Indian population is under the age of 15. But unfortunately, the education...

Education in India: Latest news from the Singapore campus of ESSEC Business School

35 per cent of the Indian population is under the age of 15. But unfortunately, the education system in India is fragmented and faces numerous challenges. This is what we experienced, during our one-month stay in Hyderabad, India: Five girls from ESSEC Singapore took time out to visit some of India's poorest schools.

The city of Hyderabad is not particularly representative of the rest of India, quite the contrary: more than 60%of the population is Muslim. In addition to visiting the site of the company which was hosting the project in partnership with CapGemini, we had the opportunity to discover a different part of India.
Before leaving Singapore for India, we spent one month preparing for our stay. Our objective: Present a developed business plan for an innovative model of affordable private schools in India. Many questions and options were raised and our plan was to answer each one of them by exploring the field. We discussed bottom of the pyramid-oriented investments: what about new technologies? What about diversifying the schools’ distributors? What about multiplying the schools’ teaching platforms (ie. Audiovisual, internet based, even SMS based)?
In the Indian education system, the English-language schools affiliated to the upscale central and international boards are at the top of the scale, boasting a globally recognized curriculum. Next come the government-aided schools, affiliated to state boards. And at the bottom are the government or municipal schools with weak infrastructure, which cater to the poor majority. The schools we visited fall into the last category. Though many children attend school, the schools remain ill-equipped. We were surprised to discover schools where they did not have proper premises, infrastructure or toilets. Children were regularly served water which was unsuitable for drinking. Another aspect that we witnessed in the schools we visited is the poor quality of teachers. Government schools are not able to attract and retain high quality teachers because the salaries are low and the schools also lack good teaching facilities.
We feel that the steps should be taken to increase the standard of schools that fall into this tier. For this, a restructuring of the educational policies and models is necessary.

Personality of the Month: Thierry PEUGEOT talks to ESSEC students in Singapore

Essec Singapore was recently delighted to receive Thierry Peugeot, the current Chairman of PSA...

Essec Singapore was recently delighted to receive Thierry Peugeot, the current Chairman of PSA Peugeot Citroen and also the President of the ESSEC Board of Overseers. It was a good opportunity for ESSEC students to ask him more about PSA Peugeot Citroën, business in Asia and graduate recruitment.

ASIAConnect: What are the reasons for a company like yours to go to China?

Thierry Peugeot: Today you need to get involved in China if you want to be a major actor of your industry and benefit from the size and growth on the market.
Moreover, it gives us the opportunity to develop products we would not have invested in otherwise. For instance, while we are specialists of diesel engines in Europe, the needs of the Chinese market could justify large investments in gasoline engines.

ASIAConnect: How do you deal with China in terms of technology transfer and partnerships, and what are your last moves?

Thierry Peugeot: It is normal to share a part of our technology when entering the Chinese market. The most important is to find the right balance. From this perspective we strive to protect by law our core technologies.
The legal way to settle in China in the car industry is to go through joint-ventures with Chinese partners. Thus we established a 50/50 joint-venture with Dongfeng in Wuhan and more recently we are in the process of creating such a company with the Chang’An group in Shenzhen.
In addition, we appointed a managing-board member in Shanghai, in May 2010, as a new strategic move, and we are currently developing an engineering centre in Shanghai as well.
To do so, we are recruiting people with strong knowledge of Asian culture, able to serve Chinese customers needs and we will do our best to have them staying with us on the long run.

ASIAConnect: What is your competitive advantage and what do you have to improve to gain market shares and sustain growth?

Thierry Peugeot: Our competitive advantage would be the style and the shape of our cars, and the quality of our products and services. But above all, brand image development and cultural specificity are two main challenges we have to meet.
Our two brands, Peugeot and Citroën still have to work on their image in Asia and enhance brand recognition, as it is especially important to Chinese customers. Why not draw inspiration from the French luxury products and brands that are really praised in China?
“Romanticism” is also a key concept: France is appreciated for its quality of life, its “art de vivre”.
The second major challenge is therefore to adapt our products to the Chinese market: I do not believe in the standardized global product. For instance, while the five-door model is well accepted in Europe, Chinese customers look in priority for harmony in the back, and appreciate a more rounded and friendly look.

ASIAConnect: You had a first inconclusive experience in China 20 years ago. What went wrong?

Thierry Peugeot: China was a very different country 20 years ago. We settled in Guangzhou and focused on the production of cars. May be we didn’t catch on quickly enough to the major changes underway in this huge country. We will now make sure to secure a reliable network of dealers, to coordinate both production and distribution and establish a win/win situation.

ASIAConnect: What about India?

Thierry Peugeot: India is definitely a priority in the mid term, but we can’t be everywhere at the same time. Each market requires huge investments and our group has to find the right car in the right time for its customers.
Years ago, Peugeot tried to invest in India but the company was not successful. Now we are working with India in terms of component supply, through Faurecia, which is based in India.

ASIAConnect: What are the companies looking for in the current business environment?

Thierry Peugeot: Nowadays companies are looking for talented people. Thus the diploma matters, but the personality and the experience make the difference. In fact, the companies are not only looking for competences and intelligence skills but also for balanced people and professionals able to capitalize on their previous experience.
Companies want to attract young and ambitious people, open-minded and curious, able to understand different cultures and who demonstrate responsible and ethical behavior.
Another key point is the ability to speak several languages fluently.
In sum, building your personal competitive advantage is essential.

ASIAConnect: In conclusion, what would you advice to current ESSEC students?

Thierry Peugeot: Enjoy! Take advantage of the opportunities you have, go abroad and build your competitive advantages.

Eye on Asia: The Port of Singapore

In November, Advanced Master Strategy of Management and International Business students had the...

In November,
had the opportunity to visit the Singapore port as a complementary activity to their International Trade class. Shamik Dutt (SMIB 2011) who worked in the Singaporean maritime industry share more about his own experience…

The port of Singapore is strategically located at the mouth of Straits of Malacca. When we see the map of Southeast Asia, we will notice that the Malacca Straits provide a shortcut to Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea and the Far East. Although the port existed since 2nd century AD, Singapore shot into prominence after it was re-discovered by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles in 1819. The British developed Singapore as a trading post and a settlement.
Ships, which are coming from or going to the West often stop at Singapore for re-fueling, stores, provisions as well as exchange of crew.

Importance of the industry:

Singapore is a country where the natural resources are not present in abundance. Under these circumstances, the port of Singapore is more than an economic boon for the country, it is actually a necessity. Singapore is the fifth busiest port in the world. The state-of-the-art container terminal at Singapore is the busiest transshipment port in the world. Due to the frequent calling of ships at the Singapore anchorage, Singapore has also developed modern ship repair yards in the country. Ship repair and conversion form the backbone of the local marine industry, accounting for about 60% of the total revenue.

Working in marine industry:

The marine industry is highly dynamic and fast paced. It works 24-7 non-stop. The work is very challenging with new scenarios coming up everyday. It also provides support and development of many local SMEs as well as encouragement to foreign investment in Singapore. Due to the high demand of ship’s spares and services, many overseas companies have set up local agencies in Singapore. Some of them are ABB, MAN B&W, Schat Harding, Norsafe, Cathelco etc. The marine industry has contributed to the development of the country’s economy during the past three decades and would continue to do so in the future also. The government of Singapore also provides support and incentives to the growth of the sector.
Singapore is not involved in the construction of ocean going ships. Instead, it is a ship conversion centres as well as a global leader in the building of jack-up rigs and the conversion of FPSO (Floating Production Storage and Offloading) units. It is also a niche player in the construction of customized and specialized vessels. Working in this industry, I have closely associated myself with the growth and development of this industry. I’m honored and proud to be part of such an industry.

An ESSEC Success Story: Sharib Anis, ESSEC Singapore Alumni President

How can ESSEC students use their diverse field of studies as an advantage in the market? (...)

Sharib Anis' Profile

Nationality: Singaporean
Current position: Trade Client Relationship (Trade Finance Banking),
ANZ Bank, Singapore
Previous experience: Relationship Manager (Corporate Banking)
ICICI Bank, Singapore and India for 2 years
Background: Supply Chain, Project management, Banking and engineer: NTU-ESSEC Double MBA

ASIAConnect: How can ESSEC students use their diverse field of studies as an advantage in the market?

Sharib Anis: Every student should do a SWOT or similar analysis on themselves to know what jobs they are suitable for and highlight their strong points and how it can be relevant to the position applied. For instance, engineering background helps in being analytical and supply-chain management helps to understand a trading company’s sale/purchase cycle.

ASIAConnect: Can you share some of your experiences with students who want to work in the same field?

Sharib Anis: As trade finance is quite specialized and complex field, I’m always learning something new! Singapore being a trading hub helps, as there is a plethora of high quality customers to deal with. Moreover, as ANZ Bank is an employee-focused company, there are many opportunities to grow and learn within the organization.
However, sometimes clients are very demanding, and experienced customers expect you to know the solution to all their problems. In addition, as all clients are over-banked, the margin of error is very low.
For students interested, Singapore is a great place to start (vs. “be”) in trade finance, as it’s a major trading hub. All the major international trading banks and companies are present here, so one can get a great exposure.

ASIAConnect: As a Singaporean citizen, you’ve already seen Singapore changing: What potential do you see in Asia and more specifically Singapore now and for the next 5 years?

Sharib Anis: I believe Singapore is a great place to be these days. It is positioned well in one of the fastest economically growing regions in the world, and also has strong links with economies like China. Also it is changing socially and becoming more and more cosmopolitan by the day. For the foreseeable future, I believe Singapore will thrive and that its best is yet to come.

ASIAConnect: As the EASCB’s President, what are your expectations and plans for the coming year?

Sharib Anis: We have started a few things with the emphasis on getting more organized and have more impact. In order to get more organized, we have a formal team structure and hold regular minute meetings. We are also working on creating a constitution and registering ourselves as a society in Singapore. Also, to have more impact, we have started the mentoring program, which seems to be coming along well so far. Franck Litzler, the EASCB Vice President, has put a lot of effort in this.

ASIAConnect: Do you have a message for the current ESSEC students?

Sharib Anis: I believe that Singapore is a very exciting place to be in these days, and for all the students who are on the Singapore campus, you have a great opportunity to develop yourselves in Singapore. I would strongly encourage you to stay on after your studies and look for opportunities here. The EASCB is always here to help you, so please let us know.

ASIAConnect: Career tip: How to deal with a “social interview”?

Sharib Anis: Candidates should approach a social interview in the same way they would any other job interview. Often, the main reason employers will include a social interview is to ensure you are a good fit with the existing team and the company’s culture. Your potential colleagues will all want to ask you questions about your general background, qualifications, experience, reasons for applying and career objectives. Researching the organization by looking at their website and annual report, and talking to your networks will help you understand the business and give you plenty point of discussion points.

2010 graduation ceremony took place on October 16th 2010

The 2010 graduation ceremony took place on October 16th 2010, at the Cergy-Pontoise campus

Among the 530 graduating students 400 received their degree in front of over thousand people. For the first time, graduates, faculty and staff members were wearing ceremonial ties with different colors, an innovation that was widely acclaimed.

The guest of honor was Mr. Thelot. As he completed his studies at ESSEC in 1974, Patrick THELOT, then 25, created ex nihilo his first company. 36 years later, the “start-up” has become the Sofinord services group, generating a turnover of 180 M€ and employing 4,900 people. He presented his experience and gave some advice to the young graduates on how to lead a successful career and a company. Two recent graduates, Bing Yan and Alexandre Avrillon, also presented their experience and life at ESSEC.
The ceremony was followed by a cocktail in the new ESSEC premises where graduates and their families, as well as faculty and staff members kept on celebrating the event. According to the tradition, a party honoring the graduates was organized by the Students Bureau.

The girl done good

“Learning at Essec takes many forms. Strong debate between peers and professors is encouraged, helping me challenge my own views”. An article by Helen Schneider in the Financial Times.

At the end of 2007, my final year of undergraduate studies at the University of the Pacific, California, I finally received the e-mail I had been waiting for. Gaining admission to my number-one choice of school was exhilarating, but I could not have predicted the degree of fulfilment my studies at ESSEC Business School in Paris were to give me.
A German national with a BBA from a US institution with a study semester in Spain, I was eager to strengthen my education with a good graduate degree, rather than seek work immediately. ESSEC was my first choice due to its reputation, opportunities to build a professional network and unconventional programme.
In addition to the academic excellence of its highly ranked MSc in management programme – ESSEC’s grande école degree – the school’s strong social values are vital to my experience here.
