These are the major themes that define the content of the back-to-school seminar for the ESSEC students in the Master of Science in Management program.

A unique formula for a creative start to the school year under the guidance of the President of the communication agency of the year in 2011, Nicolas Bordas of TBWA. “Stay hungry, stay foolish,” Steve Jobs liked to say. Why encourage young graduates to cultivate this “seed of madness” that they carry within them? Above all, how do we exercise imagination and creativity? The 500 Master of Science in Management students took on the challenge of responding to these questions across four focus areas: the manager, the business, the city, or the citizen of 2030. The 2012 Imagination Week Trophy was awarded to the group of 5 students who garnered the highest number of votes on their project "Business in 2030.

Gross National Happiness and sustainable education

On Thursday 27th October 2011 at ESSEC, the Minister of Education for the Royal Government of Bhutan, Thakur Singh Powdyel, gave a conference about Gross National Happiness and sustainable education. For Thakur Singh Powdyel, the classic indications used by states to measure their good economic health reached their limits. According to Bhutanese philosophy, purpose of life could not be restricted to more production and more consumption infinitely. Indeed, Thakur Singh Powdyel highlights that material resources are not boundless. The Minister details the measures taken by the Kingdom of Bhutan to develop the country in a healthy and sustainable way. During the conference, the Minister shares the Bhutanese vision of Green education, an education that goes beyond "fitting people out for a job".

The Kingdom of Bhutan is located at the eastern end of the Himalayas and bordered to the south, east and west by the Republic of India and to the north by the People's Republic of China. This country is famous for the term "Gross National Happiness" (GNH), an indicator that was designed to measure quality of life or social progress in more holistic and psychological terms than only the economic indicator of gross domestic product.

De la créativité à l'innovation - Matins de l'innovation ISIS du 14 octobre

Animés par Hervé Mathe, professeur à l'ESSEC et président de l'ISIS (Instiute for Service Innovation & Strategy), les Matins de l'innovation du 14 octobre 2011 avaient pour thème : "De la créaticité à l'innovation" avec pour invités Les Mines ParisTech, Orange Groupe et InProcess. Il a réuni 80 professionnels autour de ce thème porteur.

La première intervention "Les défis de l'innovation : introduction à la conception innovante” était présentée par Benoît Weil, professeur à l'Ecole des Mines ParisTech et coordonateur de la chaire Théories et Méthode de la Conception Innovante.

La deuxième intervention "Design moi une innovation! Le design, moteur de l'innovation centrée utilisateur" était présentée par Clément Bataille, Directeur de création et stratégie design, Groupe Orange.

La troisième intervention "Scénario : le cas LVMH" était assurée par Christophe Rebours, fondateur et CEO de l'agence InProcess.

Les trois interventions ont été suivies par un débat réunissant Benoît Weil, Clément Bataille et Christophe Rebours. Ce débat animé par Hervé Mathe a également reçu Gilles Pelisson, en tant que dirigeant du Groupement des Professions de Services, pour présenter le 1er Colloque National de l’Innovation dans les Services.

Organisés par l'ISIS (Institute for Service Innovation & Strategy), les Matins de l'innovation invitent des intervenants issus du monde de l'entreprise ou académiques à partager leurs expériences sur un sujet autour de l’innovation dans l’économie des services.

30 recommandations pour améliorer la loi HPST : le rapport Fourcade

Lors des amphis de la santé, événement organisé 7 fois par an par la Chaire ESSEC Santé , Monsieur le ministre Jean-Pierre Fourcade, est venu présenter son rapport relatif à la loi Hôpital, Patients, Santé et Territoires, dite HPST. Ledit texte de loi, adopté en 2009, est un projet d'organisation sanitaire et non de financement. A terme, cette loi doit permettre de mettre en place une offre de soins gradués de qualité, accessibles à tous, satisfaisant à l'ensemble des besoins de santé

33 recommandations ont ainsi été élaborées dans le rapport Fourcade, à court et moyen terme. La première partie du rapport est consacrée à la gouvernance des établissements publics de santé. La seconde partie se penche sur l'hôpital dans son environnement. La troisième partie est relative aux questions de décloisonnement du système de santé. Enfin, la quatrième partie est dédiée au dispositif d'accompagnement.

"Les Amphis de la Santé" sont organisés avec la Chaire ESSEC Santé, en collaboration avec l'Association des Cadres de l'Industrie Pharmaceutique (ACIP) et la Revue "le Quotidien du Médecin".

Les Amphis de la Santé sont destinés aux cadres de l'Industrie Pharmaceutiques, aux directeurs d'établissements hospitaliers ainsi qu'aux organismes d'assurance maladie.

Ces manifestations ont lieu 7 fois par an, sous la forme d'un débat entre une personnalité du secteur de la santé et trois "témoins" :
- un jeune cadre de l'Industrie Pharmaceutique
- un jeune directeur d'hôpital

Nicolas Bordas, Président/CEO de TBWA France et diplômé de l'ESSEC, présente la société TBWA, qui représente une quinzaine d'agences et couvre l'ensemble des métiers de la communication (publicité, communication corporate, communication événementielle) Il existe trois tendances qui touchent ces métiers. La globalisation : nous sommes dans un environnement mondial, multi culturel. La digitalisation transforme les métiers de la communication, dans la manière dont les professionnels gèrent leur rapport aux marques, aux entreprises, aux produits et aux services. La corporatisation transforme également la manière de communiquer en intégrant de nouvelles dimensions (environnement, santé, sécurité,...). Les métiers de la communication convergent vers une capacité à répondre aux problématiques corporate mais aussi commerciales. Les profils de personnes travaillant dans la communication évoluent. Les métiers de création exigent une forme d'ouverture à ce qui n'est pas toujours conventionnel ou rationnel. Les profils Grande École répondent à ce besoin. "BoP Protocol 2.0" Conference organized by ESSEC IIES and IMS, February 7, 2011

The "BoP Protocol 2.0" Conference was organized by ESSEC Institute for Innovation and Social Entrepreneurship (IIES) and IMS (Entreprendre pour la Cité) in partnership with YouPhil and hosted by Caisse d'Epargne Ile-de-France.

The conference presented an overview on BoP and the release of the French translation of the BoP Protocol.

The conference also featured:
- keynote presentation on BoP strategies & debate animated by Angela de Santiago (YouPhil)
- presentation from French Companies: feedback from field experiences
- roundtable with Stuart L. Hart & debate animated by Henri de Reboul - IMS

Speakers and participants included:

Aarti Ramaswami is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Management at ESSEC Business School. She received her Ph.D. in from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University Bloomington and joined ESSEC in 2009. Her research focuses on mentoring relationships, person-environment fit, and cross-cultural issues in these topics. At ESSEC, Aarti teaches the organizational behavior and human resource management courses.

At a recent discussion forum on social media, Waking Up to Social Media: The Hotel Industry Response, organised by HVS Executive Search and ESSEC Business School Paris, panellists were unanimous in their opinion that the hotel industry is still too conservative to effectively tap the potential of social media channels.

The event held on February 7, 2011 at Hilton Arc de Triomphe Paris was moderated by Chris Mumford, Managing Director of HVS Executive Search London. The audience comprised students and hoteliers, every single one of whom declared they are active on Facebook, Twitter and/or LinkedIn.

Research program about the "Bottom of the Pyramid" approach

This research program is based on the fact that 3 billion individuals live with $2.5 a day. This represents a whole new market for open-minded companies, local innovations and global opportunities. The social impacts are on numerous levels: education, health, basic goods. A panel of 25 students and 20 consultants have teamed up to study 5 innovative companies in India and China during 3 month. Among the 5 companies, there was Planet Finance which promotes renewable energies through microfinance and the Naandi Foundation which eradicates poverty through education.

Presentation of ARIANE, a two-day business simulation game

Ariane simulation is a two-day business simulation game. Each group of 5-6 students forms an executive committee of firms that are in competition with each other. The simulation game deals with all the major aspects of management. The students have to manage their firm over several periods and take decisions on production, marketing, R&D and finance. On the market, each firm is in competition with 4 other firms managed by other teams. At each period, the decisions of a group are compared with those of concurrent teams and with a market simulated by a computing program. The objective of the game is to deal with all the components of management and the links between them. The objective of the game is also to simulate the management of a firm in a competitive environment, which implies rapid reaction adapted to any change in the market or in the policy of the competitive firms. On the human side, this training enables students to take into account the advantages and the difficulties in taking collegiate decisions and in working as a team.

Thanks to the funding by the ESSEC Chair of Diversity and Performance and the Institute for Service Innovation and Strategy (ISIS), ESSEC Business School sent 8 students to represent France.
One Young World is a global leadership summit for young leaders age 25 & under, from the world's 192 countries to address major global challenges. The Inaugural Summit of One Young World took place on 8-10 Feb, 2010 London.

Proficiency in these tools will not only enhance their learning experience but will also facilitate their entry into the professional world. Expanded and renovated in 2008, ESSEC’s 3,000 sq. m Learning Center is much more than a library. Students can access thousands of books, academic journals, international newspapers and multimedia resources in a comfortable environment equipped with individual study areas, as well as rooms for collaborative work. Wi-Fi access and PCs for student use are available throughout the building.
