The event was supported by the United Nations Global Compact (a strategic policy initiative for businesses that are committed to aligning their operations and strategies with ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption) and the Globally Responsible Leadership Initiative (network of businesses and academic institutions aiming to develop the “next generation of responsible leaders”). Thus, students representing their country during this two day World Dialogue were selected upon their experience and commitment to be part of the next generation of responsible leaders.

The World Dialogue’s agenda consisted of speeches of highly renowned business men (including Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG/ Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars) and academics in the field of corporate social responsibility; discussions between students and professionals on management and strategic issues; and workshops during which students debated on CSR strategies. The World Dialogue was also the opportunity for those 125 students living in countries as diversified as France, Brazil, United States, Pakistan, China, Australia, etc. to share their experiences, opinions and ambitions and to build a worldwide community of future responsible leaders.

In this context, Bhutan has set itself apart politically with the establishment of the GNH, Gross National Happiness, an index put in place in 1972 to replace the GNP and which is based upon the following four criteria:

the promotion of sustainable development

the preservation and promotion of cultural values

conservation of the natural environment

the establishment of good governance

The Chair of Therapeutic Innovation has a clean bill of health!

Since its creation in 2003 by Professor Gregory Katz...

Since its creation in 2003 by Professor Gregory Katz, the Therapeutic Chair of Innovation has been supported by Sanofi-Aventis, the most generous sponsor of the ESSEC development campaign.

As of January 1st 2012, the Chair will be supported by three new partners: Roche (world leader in personalized medicine), Celgene (world leader in cell therapy) and GlaxoSmithKline biologicals (world leader in vaccines).
“These eight years with Sanofi were particularly intense and fertile” explains Professor Gregory Katz. “We are proud to see the Chair bounce back thanks to the support of three enterprises with a clear commitment to disruptive technologies that are liable to effectively combat disease, with a single purpose: to prolong patients’ lives.” This renewal is also a recognition of the work accomplished by the Chair, its team, its students, its teaching model and its research – a Chair whose funding will have brought ESSEC close to 4 million euros by 2015.
Since its creation in 2003, the ESSEC Chair of Therapeutic Innovation aims to meet two objectives:

1/ train future health industry decision makers in innovation management;

develop strategic analyses to transform therapeutic disruptive technologies into economic and social progress.

Each year, the Chair welcomes international graduate and post-graduate students from a wide variety of backgrounds seeking to steer their career towards the healthcare sector. In addition to its teaching activities, the Chair conducts socio-economic studies and strives to create a stimulating laboratory of ideas, a space for free forward thinking on the impact that these biomedical innovations will have over the next decade.

Launch of the ESSEC Chair of Change

ESSEC is launching a new multi-company research Chair on the theme of change, in partnership with CNP Assurances, Monier France, EDF, RTE, SFR and SNCF.

Change lies at the heart of company preoccupations and of society in general. Industry leaders and politicians freely employ the term change, whereas the mechanisms and processes which facilitate successful change are more difficult to grasp.
The new ESSEC Chair has set itself the objective of understanding the phenomena and mechanisms of change within a variety of community and economic environments.
This is a research Chair which will finance doctoral studies and projects.
Research will be carried out with members of ESSEC, Chair partners, private partners (companies) and public partners (public services, ministries etc.) for wider interaction between education, applied research and operational projects.

Unlike the previous literature, our formulation seeks the optimal no arbitrage bounds given the knowledge of the distribution at some (or various) point in time. By convex duality techniques, this problem is converted into an optimal transportation problem along controlled stochastic dynamics. We also provide precise connections with the Azema-Yor solution of the Skorohod Embedding problem, and we obtain some extensions.

For any information, please contact :

01 34 43 32 45

Career Center: the Singaporean Career Fair attracted 16 major Multinationals!

This first edition of the Career Fair – held on the 5th April was a major success! ESSEC Singapore Career Serviceswelcomed major corporations: 3M, Air France, Arkadin, AXA, BNP Paribas, CA CIB, Danone, DBS, LVMH, Marina Bay Sands, MercuriUrval, MSL Group, Otis, Philips, Rajah Tan, Sodexo, Total.

Every student had the opportunity to interact with a company that suited their career goals and discuss about the corporate culture, tips to succeed in the industry and the region and, of course, exchange business cards! Some motivated volunteers had the great privilege to welcome companies and, thus had more time to interact with them. “It was rewarding to discuss on an informal basis, it helped me to understand their values and way of working and I now feel even more interested in working for them in Asia.” said one of the volunteers.
For some students, it was also a good opportunity to learn about the activities of influential companies such as Arkadin, a well-implemented B2B conferencing solution.
The event took place at the right time, as some of the on-campus students would befinishing their program in the coming weeks. Most of the future graduates are looking for an internship or a job, and the fair was a chance to establish contacts in Singapore or get interviews. The lucky ones were even offered a position!

SMIB : Chinese Study trip

A delegation of sixty-two SMIB students embarked upon a 10-day study trip to Beijing and Shanghai, China, on Thursday, February 24, led by
, AcademicDirector of the Program and Corinne Peiffert, AssociateDirector for AcademicAffairs in Singapore.

This study trip was valuable and rewarding, and an amazing opportunity to experience first-hand the political, economic and social changes that arehelping China transform into an economic powerhouse. This special tour exposed the participants to the global business environment, so that they can witness how fast-growing economies in developing countries provide opportunities for businesses in the Chinese market. Most of the students “gained a better understanding of the culture, work ethic and professionalism of the Chinese by interacting with business professionals, entrepreneurs, and bankers”, says Julie Savino, the head of the organization team.

They visited the Chinese facilities of a wide range of companies in Beijing and Shanghai like Airbus, Lenovo, Deloitte, Technochina, and Bureau Veritas. They could even experience a real Chinese state-owned company, Shanghai Electric, which has a unique way of doing business andfollowsdifferent interpersonal interaction. The students also squeezed in visits to famouscultural places including Tiananmen Square, the Summer Palace, the Forbidden City, and the bright city lights of Beijing and Shanghai. The highlight of the week has been walking on the great wall covered by snow in Mutianyu, where all the SMIBs could finally become “men”as the saying goes (不到长城非好汉, if you fail to reach the Great Wall, you are not a man). It was a remarkable week by any ones standards.
However, the most important aspect of this trip was thatit strengthened the cohesion within the group after two months in Singapore. All in all, this trip was a meaningful educational experience for the students. Some of them were reallyimpressed by China and might work there in the future to make some tangible decisionsand reinforce ESSEC network across Asia.

Student Union creation in Singapore: one step further on the Campus Life

As a little village inside a fast-growing place in Asia, ESSEC campus should be the platform of continuous improvement spirit

The challenge of such union is to bring the best in terms of fun and networking to the students. At the heart of ESSEC life, the people in charge of the union have the valuable responsibilities to lead and to represent ESSEC students.
The union is the ideal link between administration, students, alumni, associations and companies.

Fun is vital for such association. Work hard, deliver harder is the moto here. Among the key roles of the union, there are events for celebrating and enjoying life in Asia. Students from SMIB, FEA, GE programs are called "events masters". They are in charge of organizing barbecues, parties, integration weekends and sports for ESSEC students. They also support union leaders for conducting all-MBAs events in Singapore.

The leaders of the student union come from each program. They represent ESSEC campus in front of stakeholders of the campus. It is the case in front of the administration, in front of the students, the alumni, the leaders from other association (newsletter, etc.), the MBAs network, etc. They have a key role for the overall well being of the union. They are in charge of meetings and feedbacks with the other team members (treasurers, events masters, secretaries).

Success comes to people who dare to stick their necks out. The student union aimed to encourage enthusiastic people to launch projects and initiatives that will benefit for everybody in the campus' life!

The latest good initiative led by ESSEC student representatives, was a multi-MBA event on Saturday 9th. Organized in partnership with Nanyang Business School MBA (NTU),Singapore Management University (SMU), National University of Singapore (NUS), and INSEADMBA, it gathered around 200 students- including 40 well-represented ESSEC - from different nationalities, backgrounds and professional experiences that enhanced the melting pot! “We really had the opportunity to discuss with everyone. As some were part-time executives, it was also a good way to expand our professional network”, says one ESSEC participant.
Regarding the event success, another event of this kind may be on track: “We would like to see an event like this every quarter if possible, in addition to other combined business functions, and even a job fair to build on the total number of students. However, the success of the network will depend on the efforts of future students and the guidance of those who have become alumni.”, says Gregory Edwards, President ofNanyang Business School MBA Student Executive Committee. It's definitely worth keeping an eye on…

ESSEC IRENE Asia launch, Ta Wei CHAO feedbacks and expectations

ESSEC IRENE ASIA was officially launched on 8 March 2011 at InterContinental Singapore. “It was really successful; Ambassador-at-large, Ministry of Foreign Affaires
was our Guest-of-Honor and he gave a keynote speech on the 8 lessons on negotiation. Manyhigh-level Government officers from ASEAN and EU as well as high-level executives from major International companies attended our event. Participants exchanged ideas and insights on negotiationin an inspiring atmosphere. The launch was followed by a good cocktail!” said
.

Withprograms already being offered on negotiation skills and cross-cultural negotiation between Asia and EuropeESSEC IRENE Asia is willing to develop in 3 key domains.

First, they want to provide cutting-edge methods and tools through executive courses on negotiation, mediation and conflict management. ESSEC IRENE Asia has already been contacted for a negotiation workshop for the MBA program of Zhejing University in May and an executive workshop for LVMH Asia Pacific in June. “On the long-run, we plan to recruit around 2 to 3 full-time training managers to coordinate our actions and 20 affiliatefellows in the following 4 years.”

The second development target is through publications; “We are currently translating some of our existing publications into Asian languagesto facilitate communication between Europe and Asia (ie. The first move. A negotiator’s Companion by
and A. Colson in Chinese and Vietnamese). In the future, we would like to translate some good publications written by Asian academics into European languages (i.e. French etc).”
Finally, research is one of the key elements to focus on. The idea is to organize conferences adapted to the evolution of business behavior in Asian and European markets. “We hope we can expand our team to2 to 3 full-time researchers in the next 4 years”.
All these planned developments merge to an ambitious objective: “In Asia, if there’s any company or academic institution that wishes to gain an expertise or support in negotiation they should think about ESSEC IRENE Asia. We hope we can achieve this objectivewithin the next 10 years”.

For more information about ESSEC IRENE Asia please contact:

Ta-Wei CHAO, Executive Director of ESSEC IRENE ASIA
100 Victoria Street, National Library Building #13-02, Singapore 188064
Telephone: +65 6884 9780 Web site: www.essec-irene.com
Fax: +65 6884 9781 or by

3rd Luxury Round Table Conference in India: 9th April

Achieving Leadership through Operational Efficiencies

City: Mumbai
Date: 9th April, 2011
Time: 6 pm – 9 pm; Followed by Cocktail and Dinner
The global financial crisis had affected the market for a number of luxury products especially in the Watches and Jewellery division.
Companies have tried to mitigate this challenge by focussing on achieving operational efficiencies by optimizing their retail format and network of business.
Luxury industry during this time has witnessed more large and lavish retail formats. Also sourcing destinations are changing. China is no more being seen as the only source of production. New countries like India and Vietnam are being considered for manufacturing efficiencies.

Photos Gallery

Luxury consumers have expressed more concern about social and environmental issues thus making the brands think of sustainable luxury. In parallel, with the advent of Web 2.0, more and more luxury companies have started to rethink their internet strategies. Being one of the last to acknowledge the importance of internet, the luxury industry today is grappling with the issue of integrating the internet within its marketing and promotions strategies.
The Mumbai Round Table will discuss issues such as: (a) rationalization of retail formats (b) network optimization (c) brand management (d) technology enablers and internet based marketing and promotion strategies (e) sourcing, and (f) splendour among squalor – sustainable luxury.

Building Global Brands: Lessons from Emerging Economies

2nd Luxury Round Table Conference in India: 18th March

Building Global Brands: Lessons from Emerging Economies

Venue: Taj Lands End, Bangalore
Date: 18th March, 2011
Time: 6 pm – 8 pm; Followed by Cocktail and Dinner
Emerging Asian nations such as China and India have recorded impressive consumption growth of luxury products in recent years.
Companies are developing interesting strategies to harness the opportunities. Some are developing products for these markets ; whereas others are developing special brands for these markets. Growth through acquisition is another route companies are taking.
It is found that building a global brand almost always requires building a strong presence in a domestic market and then using that as a platform to push onto the world stage.

Photos Gallery

Japan and South Korea have been able to develop strong global brands and will henceforth be a point of reference for many a company who intend taking their brands onto a global platform. Also, the “country of origin” remains an enigma for most of the Asian brands because of the perception of low quality.
It is henceforth critical for companies to tackle the next stage of their evolution and be able to globalize in a sustainable manner.
Some of the key issues that the Round Table would focus on (a) Insights to make a Global brand (b) Global brands investing in local brands (c) corporate strategy, philosophy and mindset to build and sustain the making of a global brand (d) Issues of Global Brands to survive and be a key player in emerging markets.

Seminar in Singapore Campus : Energy and Commodity Prices, Risk, and Performance

Introduction to the Risk Management and Performance Measurement of Financial Portfolios and Industrial Positions linked to Energy and Commodity Prices

The recent ups and downs experienced by energy and commodity markets on a global scale have underpinned the need for adopting an informed view about the risk exposure of companies concerned with energy sources and commodities.
Risk measurement and management tools borrowed from the practice developed in traditional financial sectors may not be appropriate for energy and commodity linked positions as long as the underlying prices exhibit seasonal patterns and tight relationships to physical events.
This program provides a comprehensive and operational overview on the appropriate methods and tools for assessing performance and mitigating risk affecting energy and commodity positions of financial, commercial, and industrial companies. Our focus is two-fold:

Risk: The assessment of profit-at-risk measures is put forward in a time-varying perspective. This allows the user to derive a “Term-Structure of Risk” providing clear messages to the user about the timing of risk management operations.

Performance: Positions may be conveniently assessed in terms of their performance. In a risky environment, performance can be measured using risk-adjusted indices. RAROC-type measures are presented as applied to a variety of energy and commodity based portfolios.

On top of these items is the ubiquitous theme of price modeling, which we explore on a simulation-based perspective.

French-speaking finale of Global Social Ventures Competition, organized by ESSEC, Berkeley and London Business School, on February 1st 2011.

The candidates from the French-speaking selection of last December 17th of Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Quebec are coming to defend their projects in front of a jury made up of the finest experts and sponsors of social entrepreneurship.

The GSVC is the biggest competition of projects with social aims. It is reserved for projects of companies combining economic viability and social impact. The GSVC allows the participants to meet investors interested in the projects of social entrepreneurship, to be coached by professionals of the sector and, for the winners, to get a prize between 5 000 and 25 000 $.
This competition was created in 1999 on students' initiative of the Haas School of business of Berkeley University in California. It was originally created by student association within Haas, and step by step the GSVC has taken an international scale, based on a network of academic partners in charge of selecting the best projects on their continent.
Ten projects will compete in a world finale in Berkeley in April. The GSVC has slowly widened its impact by opening the international competition through:

A network of "partner" schools: Columbia Business School, London Business School, Indian School of business, Thammasat University. Since 2009, ESSEC joined this restricted club. These institutions organize regional competitions and can identify, in March of every year, 10 world finalists who will compete in finale organized by GSVC in Berkeley in April.

A network of "members" schools: Social Venture Competition of Korea, Yale School of management, ALTIS Program Italy and Pekin University – Guanghua School of Management. These schools are in charge of spotting projects and selecting the best ones. These projects are sent to a partner school for the regional competition.

The creative advantage of homophily in interdisciplinary network

Research to date suggests that cross-discipline network ties are more likely than same-discipline network ties to facilitate creativity. Cross-discipline network ties are thought to provide access to a greater amount and variety of unique knowledge from which new ideas can be generated.

In contrast, I theorize that same-discipline network ties can have a creative advantage over cross-discipline network ties because same-discipline network ties contain unique knowledge that is deeper, more complex, and ultimately more useful for generating new ideas.

I further argue, however, that the creative advantage of same-discipline ties holds true only in the presence of open critical discussion and competence-based trust. A study of biotechnology scientists at the tie level of analysis provides essupporting evidence ; suggesting that the link between social networks and creativity goes beyond accessing unique knowledge. Specifically, creativity depends on relational mechanisms that affect the type and depth of unique knowledge accessed and how this knowledge is applied when thinking of new ideas. Limitations and practical implications are also discussed.

We construct a zero-net-worth uninformed "naive investor" who uses a random portfolio allocation strategy. We then compare the returns of the momentum strategist to the return distribution of naive investors.

For this purpose we reward momentum profits relative to the return quintiles of the naive investors with scores that are symmetric around the median. The score function thus constructed is invariant and robust to risk factor models. We find that the average scores of the momentum strategies are close to zero (the score of the median) and statistically insignificant over the sample period between 1926 and 2005, various sub-sample periods including the periods examined in Jegadeesh and Titman (1993 and 2001). The findings are robust with respect to sampling or period-specific effects in our simulations where we randomly select 10 years for 100 times.

A « renaissance man » or an « harlequin » ? Valuation tensions in stylistic inconsistency

A research seminar by Stayan V. Sgourev and Niek Althuizen on Tuesday, October 5th.

The Management Department and the Research Center are pleased to invite you to the next MOS workshop.

Eclectism tends to be penalized in the market, but “renaissance men” persist, crossing genres at will. The paper examines the conditions under which eclectism, violating norms of “categorical purity”, is penalized of forgiven. The impurity act analyzed is stylistic inconsistency, when artists mix styles, seen either as “renaissance men” or as “harlequins” dabbling in diversity.

We devised an experiment where participants estimate the aesthetic and monetary value of works of art in consistent and inconsistent styles under high – and low – status conditions. The results support the argument that impurity is more relevant to low-status actors, as inconsistency is penalized at the low -, but not at the high status level, given the reductance of audiences to enforce a high status penalty.

A cognitive (but not normative) penalty to inconstancy is identified, originating in the general preference for aesthetic consistency and the cognitive difficulties of evaluating mixed art. Eclectism is overall discouraged, but leaves sufficient leeway for “renaissance men” to survive.

Tuesday, oct, 5th at Le Club, 11.30 – 12.45.

If you wish to participate please inform
– Tel : 01 34 43 33 09

The (enormous) Cumulative Economic Relevance of Customer Satisfaction – A PLS Based approach....

The (Enormous) Cumulative Economic Relevance of Customer Satisfaction – A PLS Based approach.

Claes Fornell presents research and results, from an actual stock portfolio, which seem contradictory to conventional wisdom. First, it is possible to consistently outperform the stock market. Second, this can be done without taking on more risk. While inconsistent with financial theory, the results are consistent with SCIENCE in the more general sense : Knowledge can be used – in just about any context – in order to do better (competition) and it can be used to reduce risk.

In order ta gauge the probable future benefit of any corporate economic asset – such as customer satisfaction – it is necessary to examine both contemporaneous and intemporal effects. The latter effects have been overlooked in previous studies, but it turns out that they are quite sizable and have about the same size as the contemporaneous ones. They are obtained from the power of customer satisfaction portfolio returns to predict future excess market returns. If investors would pay more attention to the primary sources of future cash flows – and most of them come from repeat consumer spending – aggregate consumer utility would increase and equity markets would benefit from greater efficiency.

Biography

"Claes Fornell is Donald C. Cook Professor of Business Administration and director of the National Quality Research Center at the Ross School of Business, University of Michigan.

According to a 2008 study by INFORMS, he is the most influential marketing scholar in the world in both practice and academia. The study examined 3,004 articles published from 1982-2003 in leading academic journals (Journal of Marketing, Journal of Marketing Research, Marketing Science, and Management Science) to determine which had the highest impact on both academic research and the practice of marketing. Out of the top 100 academically most cited papers in marketing science, Fornell authored or co-authored five of the top 50, with three in the top 20. In terms of the impact of articles on academic research, Fornell authored or co-authored three of the top 15 most impactful. In both practice and academia, this is more than anybody else in the world.

As founder of the American Customer Satisfaction Index (
), Fornell was also invited to speak at the Campus of Excellence in the Canary Islands. Past guest speakers at this event include mostly Nobel laureates, former presidents, and top-level scientists. With assistance from Fornell, versions of the ACSI have been launched in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Great Britain, Mexico, Colombia, Turkey, Japan, China, South Korea, and most recently, Singapore. He is regularly interviewed by leading media publications, such as the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, USA Today and Business Week."

Management Education : Fostering innovative and responsible leadership in emerging economies

ESSEC – FUDAN, 13 juillet 2010 : the Shanghai Conference

The fast pace of today’s globalisation has culminated in colossal financial and social challenges. Developed, emerging and under-developed economies alike are currently facing a wave of crises, resulting in multitudes of questions.
Today’s business leaders are being asked whether they are limiting themselves to value creation for shareholders or whether they aspire to develop a broader understanding of firms missions, a value-based leadership in pursuit of sustainable economic and social progress. The consequence of the effects of the company on the community in which it operates, as well as the society at large, is becoming an increasingly important issue.
How can companies incite responsible and innovative behaviour and leadership in the countries in which they operate?
This conference is located at Fudan University, July 13th, 2010, from 1:30 to 5:30 pm.
