During the International Year of Statistics in 2013 1,987 groups, 122 countries participate in global awareness campaign.

The ESSEC Business School and more than 1,987 organizations in 122 countries are combining energies this year to promote the International Year of Statistics (Statistics2013), a worldwide initiative that will highlight the contributions of the statistics field to finding solutions to global challenges.
The goals of this awareness campaign are to:
• Increase public understanding of the power and impact of statistics on all aspects of society
• Nurture statistics as a profession, especially among high-school and college students
Statistics2013 participants include national and international professional societies, universities, schools, businesses, government agencies and research institutes. These groups will help millions of people understand the value of statistical science through seminars, workshops and outreach to students and the media.
"’Big Data’ has today become a trendy topic and continues to gain importance as the ‘black gold’ of tomorrow. But unlike oil, its potential relies not on the availability of a resource but on its refining. Statistical analysis can transform data into credible and relevant information that can be interpreted and applied" says Vincenzo Esposito Vinzi, Professor, Information Systems, Decision Sciences and Statistics Department, and Dean for Faculty and Faculty Affairs.

SUN ESSEC, PARIS 2013: Think big, start small, act now!

ESSEC will host the 1st ever SUN ESSEC conference on responsible management education, incorporating the 14th GRLI General Assembly

ESSEC Business School in partnership with the
(GRLI), EFMD (European Foundation for Management Education), the United Nations Global Compact France and the research network GOLDEN for Sustainability will host on June 6th, 7th and 8th “
”, a gathering of two hundred delegates from around the world for three days of engaged learning, action and interaction.
Higher education in management is extremely impacted by the economic crisis. The relevant questions about how the processes and tools being taught in business schools, particularly those taught in the name of efficiency, amplify or not certain behaviours of greed and short-term decision-making are very pertinent today.
Various academic structures work hard at examining such questions, notably the two large associations of international business schools, AACSB (American) and EFMD (European). These two entities decided in 2013 to attribute the role of driving the discussion on such reflections to the Globally Responsible Leadership Initiative (GRLI) - created in 2004 by the United Nations and EFMD.
SUN ESSEC, as in Sustainable Development Network, will be a major international event at the interface between business, management education and society and will take place at ESSEC’s Cergy campus, near Paris.
It will focus on the fundamental changes required to:
- educate a new generation of globally responsible leaders,
- enable truly sustainable business,
- and engage in the transformation of society towards sustainability.

The international festival for Corporate Films & TV on ecology and sustainable development scheduled
April 16-18, at Deauville

Corporate Social Responsibility and sustainable development are currently at the heart of corporate and institutional strategies. These are key issues that ESSEC Business School has always taken into consideration both through its programs and the research it develops.
Anne Jeny-Cazavan, Professor and Head of the Accounting and Management Control Department at ESSEC Business School and member of the ESSEC steering committee for CSR actions stated that "It is with great pleasure that ESSEC Business School, of whom I am the representative, lends its support as an academic partner to the
, the world’s first international festival of corporate films & TV on ecology and sustainable development.

The ESSEC Foundation awarded 66 scholarships to students from the Group

Because diversity is one of the founding values of ESSEC Business School, a wide range of financial aid is offered to students, to help them pursue their education with peace of mind.

ESSEC scholarships, apprenticeships, partnerships with companies and agreements with financial institutions are some of the options available to help students develop their personal and professional projects. The ESSEC Foundation actively supports this policy and on April 11, awarded 66 scholarships to students from different ESSEC programs. This very first scholarship ceremony was the opportunity for scholarship recipients from 2011 and 2012 to meet the Foundation donors.

Scholarships to support Students

Since it was founded, the ESSEC Foundation has collected €350,000 for scholarships, €250,000 of which were redistributed in 2011 and 2012 to a total of 66 students affiliated with different ESSEC Business School programs:
• In 2011, 14 scholarships were awarded for the 2011-2012 academic year to 10 French students, and 4 international students. Ten of these are men, and four are women.
• In 2012, 52 scholarships were awarded for the 2012-2013 academic year to 43 French students, and nine international students.
Of these 52 scholarships, nine were financed exclusively by the classes of 87 and 92 through the “Class Gift Anniversaire de Promotion” [class reunion gift], which is a scheme implemented by ESSEC Alumni and supported by the Foundation to reinforce the support offered to younger generations.
"The ESSEC Foundation scholarship has significantly improved the conditions under which I study. I hope to join the Chair in Philanthropy next year and to pursue the double degree program in Cognitive Studies from the Ecole Normale Supérieure (ULM). Pierre-Etienne Fiquet, one of ESSEC's MSc in Management students and recipient of an ESSEC Foundation scholarship told us: "my ambition for the future is to join a consulting firm specializing in development for countries in a post-conflict reconstruction situation."

ESSEC opens up to the Gulf region and partners with the Arabian Gulf University to create a modular MBA

The Gulf is currently a fast-growing region and a strategic place on the international market.

Based on this observation, ESSEC Business School and The Arabian Gulf University, sole pan-regional public university of the gulf countries, decided to join forces to create a modular MBA, to meet the demand from local public and private companies for fully-qualified managers.
The Gulf region is made up of many organizations and public companies, and for their growth it is imperative they have highly-qualified managers and executives, with a better understanding of international economic stakes and challenges. ESSEC wants to contribute towards the development of this region through the education of this new generation of managers.
Its partnership with The Arabian Gulf University, a prestigious pan-regional university present in six countries of the Gulf region, will be the opportunity for ESSEC to establish a direct relationship with this region and to open up to these countries, following the ESSEC group's internationalization strategy.

Eight regional centres are to be established, from Rabat and Manilla to Amman and Tbilissi (
).
In 2012 ESSEC IRENE, the Académie diplomatique internationale (ADI) and ENCO formed a partnership that brings together their expertise in management, diplomacy and risk mitigation. Given the consortium’s results already achieved on the governance of the CBRN Centres of Excellence, the European Commission has decided to expand its mission. The team will now focus its effort on Northern Africa, while continuing its work in the Middle East, the Balkans and the Caucasus. The team is working closely with the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission and the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI)....

Cergy, 22 Octobre 2012 - During a General Meeting held today, ESSEC Business School’s President and Dean, Pierre Tapie, announced several important international developments and changes to the school’s management team.

New campus in Singapore - ESSEC will build a new campus in Singapore, to be located in an area regrouping universities, incubators and high-tech companies.
After three years of prolonged discussions with Singapore authorities, ESSEC has decided to build a 6,500 square-meter building on Nepal Hill, in the One North business park. This five-story facility will triple the school’s training capacity in terms of numbers of undergraduate and gradúate students and executive education participants.
The campus has been designed to welcome about 100 permanent staff members, including 30 professors, and 1,500 students every year. The building, designed by renowned Singaporean architect Dr. Liu Thai Ker, was inspired by both European and Asian architecture, and aims to symbolize a bridge between both worlds.
The construction phase will begin in February 2013 during the International Advisory Board meeting to be held in Singapore and will finish in December of 2014.

RIO+20 calls for radical transformation of Management Education

ESSEC Business School answers to the call

Cergy, June 19th 2012 – On June 15th at the RIO+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro, the 50+20 initiative unveiled a vision for the transformation of management education, in which the common tenet of being the best in the world is revised in favour of creating businesses that are designed and led to achieve the best for the world. ESSEC Business School is one of the main partner institutions of the initiative.

The RIO+20 vision
In order to create a world where all citizens live well and within the limits of the planet, 50+20 urges action toward a different kind of society with a revised economic framework that is celebrated for its contribution to society and the world. Equally, businesses will need to become intimately involved in this transformation by accepting challenges and responsibilities beyond short-term economic performance.

Given that the very foundations of business and management education are critically examined, the vision concerns business, management and leadership education in general. Stakeholders in this landscape include not only business schools, leadership and executive development programs or corporate universities, but also think tanks, business consultancies and vocational training centers.

Pierre Tapie, Dean and President of ESSEC Business School and former Chairman of the GRLI Board says: "Business schools and Business in general are strongly challenged by the present crisis. Have we prepared the appropriate leaders? Are we preparing the next generation of global leaders able to grasp the present challenges: innovation, common good and sustainability? Here are central questions fiercely debated among Business Schools professors and Deans. The Rio + 20 call is an articulated contribution to these debates, emphasizing their responsibilities towards society as a whole."

ESSEC Business School presented two projects at the Global Social Venture Competition

Cergy, may 16, 2012 - ESSEC Business School presented two projects from the regional semifinals for the French-speaking countries of Europe, the Middle East and Africa at the 5th edition of the Global Social Venture Competition (GSVC).
The GSVC is the only international competition for social and environmental business plans by students and graduates. ESSEC’s Institute for Innovation and Social Entrepreneurship (ESSEC IIES), in partnership with Deloitte, has become the European network support for the competition— launched by Berkeley—for the French-speaking countries of Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
The Deloitte Foundation’s mission is to support those who, through their love of entrepreneurship and spirit of innovation, seem capable of effecting deep social changes, and so contributing towards a more socially-cohesive development. The foundation created the Cluster for Social Innovation that supports social entrepreneurship throughout France and thereby plays an active role in the development of novel economic models, adapted to the major environmental and social challenges of the 21st century. It is through this social innovation hub that the Deloitte Foundation joined the Global Social Venture Competition as a strategic partner for the first time this year.
"The challenges of social entrepreneurship for our society are increasingly important nowadays. ESSEC’s Institute for Innovation and Social Entrepreneurship was delighted to continue our involvement in the Global Social Venture Competition. We received nearly 140 applications, all of which were equally interesting!” stated Thierry Sibieude, Director of the ESSEC IIES.

Starting in the fall of 2012, ESSEC’s Advanced Master’s Degree in International Food Industry Management will offer part of its course in Singapore

Asia, and more specifically China, India and Japan represent a high proportion of the world GDP, and more importantly, present a strong real growth. The citystate of Singapore, at the heart of Asia, has become a true business hub for the whole region and home to the ‘head offices’ of many international companies established on the Asian continent.
In this context of high levels of growth, the Asian food industry is a market which offers tremendous potential, but, at the same time, is a very complex one to penetrate. In order to face this growing demand, ESSEC Business School has decided to offer students from its Advanced Master’s Degree in international Food Industry Management the opportunity to complete part of the curriculum at its Singapore campus.
The spectacular growth of middle and upper classes, the evolution of the Asian market, both in the sectors of consumer and luxury goods, are all subjects currently under in-depth analysis by different specialists.

The Senate and ESSEC launch the 13th edition of the Tremplin Entreprises competition and call for projects

"We Senators often witness the difficulties met by entrepreneurs to raise funds, through the Tremplin Entreprises competition, we would like to stimulate and encourage innovating, solidarity-based, growth-promoting and job-creating projects, by allowing them to meet directly with investors."
Jean-Pierre Bel, President of the French Senate
“There are more entrepreneurs in France than there are companies who can produce the necessary wealth to maintain our social model, a model which is threatened by an aging population and an ever-more costly solidarity system. This widespread concern invites us to identify the bottlenecks to the growth of our SMEs and, of course, to remedy them. The impact of administrative, fiscal and financial obstacles cannot be ignored, however they cannot fully explain the low number of growth-contributing SMEs. In order for our companies to grow, our entrepreneurs must want them to. The public debate would gain from the integration of ambition among our entrepreneurs” declared Hamid Bouchikhi, Management Professor and Academic Director of ESSEC Ventures.
In order to address these concerns, ESSEC Business School and the French Senate decided to focus the 13th annual edition of the Tremplin Entreprises competition, which will take place on Monday October 8, 2012 at the French Senate, around the theme: “From innovating start-up to growth-promoting company with international ambition”.
Co-organized by the French Senate and ESSEC since 1999, Tremplin Entreprises is a competition for innovating companies and a reference for entrepreneurship and venture capital.

The Entrepreneurs & Co Evening

The large community of ESSEC entrepreneurs will gather Wednesday, November 30, 2011 at the ESSEC Campus - CNIT building

As a driving force of entrepreneurial development in France, ESSEC has been classified by the Financial Times as the 5th leading university in the world for entrepreneurship in 2011.
Innovation and entrepreneurship are still at the heart of ESSEC’s values. Instilling a desire to create and innovate has propelled ESSEC to initialize its pioneer actions in this domain.
In the past ten years, the academic and operational system of the school has developed considerably with the institution of programs, chairs, and business incubators such as ESSEC Ventures, the innovative design program (Création de produits innovants or CPI), the Institute for Service Innovation & Strategy (ISIS), as well as the Antropia program for social entrepreneurship.
This environment allows for the creation of more than 50 companies per year.
Rich with entrepreneurial experience, ESSEC, in partnership with the Versailles Val d’ Oise/Yvelines Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIV), has created this event which reunites 300 of its entrepreneurs: company founders, managers, and business purchasers for a unique evening of networking.

ESSEC is launching a new multi-company research Chair on the theme of change, in partnership with CNP Assurances, Monier France, EDF, RTE, SFR and SNCF.

Change lies at the heart of company preoccupations and of society in general. Industry leaders and politicians freely employ the term change, whereas the mechanisms and processes which facilitate successful change are more difficult to grasp.
The new ESSEC Chair has set itself the objective of understanding the phenomena and mechanisms of change within a variety of community and economic environments.
This is a research Chair which will finance doctoral studies and projects.
Research will be carried out with members of ESSEC, Chair partners, private partners (companies) and public partners (public services, ministries etc.) for wider interaction between education, applied research and operational projects.

The Relationship with Success: ESSEC and the CSA Institute Publish the Results of an International Study

On Thursday ESSEC revealed the results of an international study on success which it conducted in partnership with the CSA Institute.

In all of the countries the study looked at (Germany, Brazil, China, the US, France, India, Morocco, the United Kingdom, Russia and Singapore), the feeling of having achieved success in life is shared by an overwhelming majority amongst the upper socio-professional categories surveyed.
Although one’s professional life is very closely connected to the feeling of success, it is first and foremost the relationship with one’s nearest and dearest (colleagues, family, friends) which seems to offer a universal definition of the idea of success.

Through this study, ESSEC sought to explore the notion of success and its components across the world.

What does it mean to achieve success in life?

Is there a universal definition of success?

What are the trade-offs between one’s personal and professional life?

What are the real attributes of success?

Are some countries or cultures more conducive to creating success than others?

Women Be European Board Ready!

ESSEC launches a program to help women to take their rightful place on executive and management boards in partnership with MIDDLENEXT

Companies can no longer ignore the issue of parity between men and women in the top-level echelons of their organisations: increasing competition, scarcity of talent and stakeholder demands for equal opportunity mean proactive action by companies is now imperative.
A recent law reforming corporate governance requires the presence of women on the board of directors – an indication of the growing urgency of the issue. Despite efforts by certain companies to implement a more balanced proportion of men and women managers, there is still much progress to be made.
The higher up in an organisation's hierarchy, the fewer the women. Despite concerted efforts by national and European authorities (fairer regulations, incentives etc.), and the commitments of pioneering companies, institutions and associations, whilst some progress has been made, the glass ceiling remains largely intact. According to the European Commission, out of the 30% of
managers who are women, only 10% reach director level.

Backed by its strategic partner BNP Paribas Wealth Management, and its associate partners, Fondation de France and KPMG.

The ESSEC business school is set to launch its new Philanthropy Chair today.
For the past several years, philanthropy has grown and become more international, just as its role in the handling of certain social challenges has been expanding and the tools made available to philanthropists have become more diverse. The highly unique positioning of philanthropy - falling within neither the public sector nor the private, for-profit sector - and its ability to innovate have encouraged experimentation in all areas of general interest that aim to improve the common good (health, education, culture, environment….).
Nevertheless, European philanthropy remains poorly understood and research dedicated to it is fragmented, spread out amongst a number of universities and think tanks.

Based on this observation, ESSEC wanted to set up a research chair, joining forces with BNP Paribas.

Wealth Management, the first Private Bank to become involved in philanthropy by providing philanthropic services to its clients and by promoting awareness and exchanges...

ESSEC Business School is launching a new MBA which focuses on providing professionals with unique insights into current critical global challenges such as energy, health care and transportation in emerging markets. The school will welcome its first intake of students — composed of 30 to 50 people — in September 2011.
The 12-month MBA programme will include networking seminars; experiential learning trips to emerging markets such as Africa, India or China; and study trips to Singapore and Eastern Europe. A final 3-week cross-disciplinary project, the Capstone Seminar, will allow students to integrate what they’ve learned throughout the MBA.
“The ESSEC Global MBA is designed to expand knowledge with an experiential learning method that continuously challenges participants. The programme will unleash their critical thinking and creative abilities,”, says Ashok Som, Associate Dean of ESSEC Business School.

ESSEC, in partnership with BNP Paribas Real Estate and Poste Immo, is creating a new academic chair: The Chair for Real Estate and Sustainable Development

ESSEC, the only French management school to offer real estate economics, finance and management to post-secondary students as part of their initial training, has just created a new Chair for Real Estate and Sustainable Development, which is being led by Ingrid Nappi-Choulet and jointly financed by BNP Paribas Real Estate and Poste Immo, who are deeply involved both in the selection of research objectives and in the development of the curriculum for courses, seminars, thesis tutorials and internships. This partnership will enable the Chair for Real Estate and Sustainable Development to broaden its reach and further develop management aspects of the real estate industry.

Since the launch of this new partnership, 20 students have taken up internships within BNP Paribas Real Estate’s various business fields: promotion, transaction, consulting, expertise, property management and investment management. To date, six students have already been recruited by BNP Paribas Real Estate, including three RICS interns (out of a total 27 who chose this course of study) (...)

Urban-Planning for the 21st Century : ESSEC and publisher Editions de l’Aube launch a new collection

Cities and more generally, regional districts, are home to the majority of the population, are the hubs of activity, and collective intelligence, regulate the economy and dictate social interaction norms. However, they can also, on a worldwide level, contribute to increasing economic inequality and become the object of social and political conflict.
They are at the heart of some of the most pressing issues of the 21st century. ESSEC’s Urban Economy Chair encourages local public bodies and companies to improve management policies and increase the efficiency of their contractual relationships, by promoting stability and prosperity in cities and districts. ESSEC has therefore decided to join forces with French publisher, Editions de l’Aube, to launch the collection, Villes et Territoires (‘Towns and Districts’) under the direction of Franck Vallérugo.

“Sexuality and Globalization” by Laurent Bibard published by Editions l’Harmattan

The notion of sexuality in the context of globalization is an increasingly worrying topic of debate. The economy, science and technology progressively dominate our lives, practically and intellectually, with predictable repercussions on human interaction and the natural world in which we live. It is vitally important, in light of certain contemporary issues, to reevaluate often conflicting categorizations of sexuality. Developing a deeper understand of sexual dynamics is essential if we are to overcome some of the global challenges ahead.
Indeed, by developing a clearer understanding of the genders, it becomes evident that in the roots of their inherent differences, lie common foundations.

In his book “Sexuality and Globalization”, Laurent Bibard reveals how the interaction between the different sexes increasingly leads to well-documented situations of tension, debate, misunderstanding as well as to reconciliation and cross-fertilization, resulting in gender-related issues and debates that have become central to the human condition...
