Mr. Sylvain Remy, Director of the Institute for Sustainable Development and Smart Cities, was an invited speaker for the 2016 Smart Cities Innovation Summit on Securing Long Term Sustainability held on 2 March 2016 in Singapore.

Cities are multidimensional, comprising population, transportation, built environment, etc. One urban dimension that is often overlooked is the ecosystem, yet human life has a profound connection with ecosystems.

During his presentation, Mr. Remy shared insights on how it is important for cities aspiring to smartness to harness the power of urban ecosystem services. Singapore itself provides a great example of a large city which has long been emphasizing natural capital, such as trees and waterways, but cities around the world are gradually becoming more aware of the value and return on investment of ecosystems.
