Dr. Patrick Lecomte: Expertise is the key to art investment

Dr. Patrick Lecomte, Senior Research Fellow, ESSEC Business School was invited to speak at the opening ceremony of the Asia Institute of Art and Finance in Shanghai on Monday March 28, 2016. In his speech “Expertise is the key to art investment”, Dr. Lecomte pointed out the complexity of dealing with art as an alternative investment class. According to him, idiosyncrasies such as the heterogeneity of artworks and illiquidity in most segments of the art market, impact investors‘ ability to successfully invest in art.
Dr. Lecomte stresses that specialized skills and connoisseurship are key for investors to financialize art. He also welcomes the opportunities that the Institute, based in the Shanghai Tower, a new landmark in Pudong business district, will give to industry experts, business people, and scholars to share knowledge and develop a new understanding of the global art market with a uniquely Chinese perspective.
