ESSEC and CY Cergy Paris University launch the first "StartUp Studio" dedicated to Sustainable Innovation in an academic institution

12.10.2022

In partnership with CY Cergy Paris University, ESSEC is launching a groundbreaking initiative in academia: a "StartUp Studio" dedicated to sustainable innovation. By bringing together cutting-edge innovation developed by researchers and the entrepreneurial talents of the ESSEC ecosystem, the StartUp Studio will enable the development of large-scale business projects that meet today's environmental challenges.

In addition to its ESSEC Ventures incubator, which enables around 140 student companies to be created each year, ESSEC has considerably strengthened its entrepreneurship programme with the creation of the "StartUp Studio".

While the incubator provides a useful framework for students to develop their own projects, the StartUp Studio facilitates the "industrialisation" of creating a startup by assembling the resources needed to solve a specific problem: an experienced, multidisciplinary team providing daily operational support, a contribution of financial capital, and a rich ecosystem of talent and partners (mentors, industrialists, innovation players, investors, etc.).

This process, which has been tried and tested in various industries but never before implemented by an academic institution, can significantly reduce the development time and failure rate of startups.

Working in close collaboration with the best institutions and research centers, including the CNRS and CEREMA, innovation players and large groups, the Startup Studio aims to create three to four companies with a positive environmental impact per year.

ESSEC and CY Cergy Paris University respectively bring their multidisciplinary expertise - business, scientific and technological -, their ecosystems and their exceptional pool of talent: students, participants and alumni eager to provide answers to the major challenges of our time.

With the launch of this startup studio dedicated to sustainable innovation, ESSEC is making a firm commitment to become the benchmark school for supporting and positively influencing the way we respond to the environmental issues that impact businesses, organizations and society.

"The environmental emergency requires a rethink of how to create startups that provide solutions to this problem. The startup studio model, which has been widely proven in the digital industry, ensures an effective launch while removing the risk. The students and alumni of ESSEC and its partners constitute a pool of potential co-founders capable of accelerating the market launch and growth of the companies created by the StartUp Studio," says Nicolas Landrin, Executive Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation at ESSEC.

"Shaping companies to meet the challenges of the transition is a major challenge for which it is necessary to create innovative and efficient facilities such as the StartUp Studio CleanTech run by ESSEC. For CYU, it will be a matter of helping these "startups" benefit from the innovation coming out of our research laboratories," adds Olivier Romain, Director of CY Transfer at CY Cergy Paris University.
